Black Mass, starring Johnny Depp and an ensemble cast of excellent actors, tells the chilling story of the notorious criminal, James "Whitey" Bulger from 1975 to late 1980's. As was shown in its trailer, Depp is seemingly unrecognizable and goes on to portray the mobster with a resonating tone that is constant throughout the film. Writers Jez Butterworth and Mark Mallouk manage to adapt an interesting story dynamic of different perspectives from Bulger's known associates creating a well established plot. Additionally, cinematographer Masanobu Takayanagi captures a cold and eerie setting in the streets of South Boston that helps tie the film in with the theme and setting itself. Although somewhat cluttered with the differing perspectives within the story, the film manages to hold attention and create a firm period piece.
