I’m not sure anyone will read this but I thought that I would talk about the fantastic moment of my childhood when I discovered the wonderful world of comics. It all started when I was about 7 years old. I remember going to the convenience store with my grandmother. In the corner by the register was a rack that contained magazines and whatnot. In the bottom was a stack of the neatest things my 7 year old mind had ever seen. COMIC BOOKS!! My grandmother wouldn’t buy me any but that didn’t mean I wasn’t hooked. I saw a cover with a guy in a grey and blue suit with a yellow belt. He had pointy ears and a bat on his chest circled by the moon. I knew that guy!

I had seen Batman on TV so I knew who he was but this, this was a goldmine. I could read about all the cool characters I had watched on TV since I was 5. I had to get some of these and find out about all these incredible characters. I started saving my allowance and buying comics at the grocery store in 3 packs that hung on a turnstile rack. You always knew what 2 of the books were but the third was a surprise. I always tried to peek and sometimes I could figure out the middle book but usually it was a crap shoot. That pointy eared guy became my favorite because he had a cool sidekick that I thought could be me.

As the years rolled on I developed a discerning palate when it came to the books I bought. Batman, Justice League of America, and Teen Titans were just a few of my favorites. I know you’re thinking “Why the hell is this guy telling us all this?” The reason is simple…now all of my childhood icons (Yes, I looked up to them as role models. They embodied the best a person could be!) are now becoming real; real as in the sense that they are now appearing on the Silver Screen and the Small Screen. All my childhood fantasies are becoming larger than life and it all looks so AWESOME. I never thought that the Green Arrow could be SO incredible. I mean I liked him; he was a smart-ass that cared about the common man. But now Arrow has taken him to all new heights. Notably, they have used a lot of ole pointy ears material to make him this cool but still, cool none the less.

Now we’re on the verge of seeing the beginning of my favorite team leap into our lives just as awesome as I always knew they were. When I was a kid, reading comics wasn’t cool. It was something dweebs did. I didn’t care. Now, finally, I and all my dweeby counterparts here in the good ole USA are finally getting recognition. My friends call me and ask me “What does that mean, what’s coming next?” or “What’s up with that guy, what can he do?” Vindication is mine!! And if you were a kid that stayed up late to read comics whether you were supposed to or not, it’s yours too. Batman v Superman, Justice League, Green Lantern Corps, Shazam…

They’re all coming and I’m so excited I could scream. This is the greatest time of my life because it is finally COOL TO BE A NERD!!! Thank you for taking this trip down memory lane with me. Catch you at the Movies!!
