In the excitement leading up to CBS' Supergirl premiering next month and introducing the world to a whole new kind of superheroine, we'd be remiss if we didn't wish happy birthday to the character of Supergirl herself, Kara Zor-El!

The cousin to Superman, Kara Zor-El's first appearance (canonically, at least) was in 1959, and she's gone through many trials and tribulations since then. But one thing is for certain: Today, September 22nd, is her Earth birthday equivalent.

Fun fact: It's ALSO the birthday of Laura Vandervoort, the actress who played the role of Kara/Supergirl on Smallville.

In honor of her birthday, check out the new trailer that dropped last night for the upcoming TV series:

Supergirl has become a major part of DC's lore and major Superman storylines, particularly with DC's push to engage a younger audience, particularly girls and women. Along with Superman in the comics, she's also worked closely with Barry Allen/The Flash and Hal Jordan/Green Lantern. Now, whether or not we will see this happen in the live action TV world remains to be seen, with Melissa Benoist being contracted to CBS and the rest of the DCTVU being under the umbrella of the CW.

But regardless of what happens in the TV series, Supergirl will go on in the comics to do good and spread hope wherever she goes. If any fictional character deserves a happy birthday, it's her!
