Acting is a tough business and we've all heard of the drawn-out process of getting a movie role: Talent agencies receive certain actor specifications and match them with potential actors, who then go to meet casting directors and read some lines in character, hoping to win over the hearts and minds of the producers. And if they are successful, they might be called back to endure more nerve-wracking auditions to see if they are really perfect for the role!

Yet, sometimes the casting process isn't as simple as that and actors often land roles in rather unconventional ways. From Skype interviews, to sexy car-washing and awkward dance routines, the following 8 actors and actresses prove that there are no rules in Hollywood when it comes to acting success:

1. Mila Kunis for Black Swan

Mila Kunis never officially auditioned for the role in Black Swan. In fact, upon Natalie Portman's recommendation, she just Skyped with director Darren Aronofsky, who quickly agreed that she was perfect for the part. Easy!

2. Shia LaBeouf for Nymphomaniac

In order to impress Lars Von Trier, Shia LaBeouf sent pictures of his penis to the legendary director to convince him that he should be cast in the Nymphomaniac role. And although he modestly admitted that he didn't have the biggest package, he was adamant that he certainly knew what to do with it.

In addition to this, he revealed during an interview on Chelsea Lately that:

"I sent videotapes of me and my girlfriend having sex and that’s how I got the job."

Well I guess in his case, big things do indeed come in small packages.

3. Rupert Grint for Harry Potter

When he was just 11 years old, little Rupert saw a broadcast about open auditions for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone while watching a kids' news show on the BBC called Newsround.

Eager to give acting a try, he sent in a video tape of himself performing a rap he had written explaining why he was perfect for the role of Ron Weasley. Here he is talking about it (but sadly unable to perform it!) a few years ago:

4. Emilia Clarke for Game of Thrones

Yep, who would have thought that the Mother of Dragons would break into a little jig in attempts to land the role of Daenerys in Game of Thrones.

During the audition, show runner David Benioff joked that she should do a dance, leading to Emilia throwing shapes as part of the Funky Chicken routine, followed by a swift transition into the Robot. Thankfully her moves paid off!

5. Megan Fox for Transformers

Megan Fox famously washed director Michael Bay's Ferrari to land the role in Transformers. No acting skills required.

Here's a part of her audition:

6. Christian Bale for American Psycho

Supposedly, Christian Bale was so determined to be cast as the lead role in American Psycho that he answered his calls from the producers and directors as the character Patrick Bateman. They clearly couldn't say no afterwards!

7. Madonna for Evita

As well as auditioning for the role, Madonna also swears that she was actually possessed by Evita Perón, going on to send a hand-written letter to the director begging him for the role in her name.

8. Charlize Theron for Children of the Corn III

It seems that Charlize Theron actually got her big acting break by accident! When she was 18, she moved to Hollywood with only one suitcase and one day, she was trying to cash her very last check. The bank refused to accept it because it was from a different state, so things got pretty heated, with Charlize having a full blown argument with the bank teller. She caught the attention of one man, John Crosby, who helped her remedy the situation and open an account.

And as she was leaving the building, he approached her and signed her on to his talent agency. Within months, with his help, she landed her first role in Children of the Corn III. Lucky or what?
