The Internet has recently lost its mind over a rather fabulous photoshop job of Christina Ricci as Morticia Addams, sparking fevered discussion about a potential Addams Family Reboot.
Still, we can't look forward to the future of the Addams Family without remembering its marvelous past - and that of one man in particular: Raul Julia. Take a look at one of his finest scenes as Gomez Addams...
For his sizzling sexual chemistry with co-star Anjelica Huston (unforgettable in black as Morticia Addams) Raul Julia won MTV Movie Awards Best Kiss, but he also won several Golden Globes, Emmy and Saturn awards for various movies in his amazing film career - before it was cruelly cut short.
An Amazing Career for an Amazing Man
Raul Julia featured in over 35 movies - including the Academy Award nominated Kiss of the Spider Woman and iconic horror-thriller The Eyes of Laura Mars - but his big heart never allowed him to keep all of his success to himself. A tireless worker for humanitarian causes, Raul was part of the New York Council for the Humanities, sponsoring young kids to pursue scriptwriting rather than fall prey to street violence. His own initiative, Visiones Luminosas, helped young writers, and his work for NYSF was not paid - he gave generously of his time as well as his skill.
He was a member of Racial Harmony, trying to bring people of different colors together and eradicate racist prejudice, and also worked for The Hunger Project, for which he received a Global Citizen Award for his achievement in 'Ending Hunger.'
Sadly, Raul Julia's glittering career was cut short at the age of only 54. A series of freak, tragic events unfolded in Mexico, 1994, where Raul was shooting his movie, The Burning Season. He contracted food poisoning, which affected him severely as he'd only had stomach surgery a few months previously.
By late October he had been admitted to hospital with devastating abdominal pains, which, coupled with his general ill health, led to a stroke. He fell into a coma and died four days later on life support.
As per his wishes, Julia's body was flown back to his native Puerto Rico, where he was honored by a state funeral and grand burial ceremony, each attended by thousands of people. Hundreds of carnations were dropped out of a helicopter as he was committed to the ground.
For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday.
- Raul Julia as M. Bison, Street Fighter
Raul Julia's last film role will be remembered fondly, especially by '90s kids. A dramatic, commanding figure of a man, he was perfect for the gloriously villainous M. Bison in Street Fighter, which aired after his untimely death. The end credits of the movie simply say:
For Raúl. Vaya con Dios.
What a fantastic actor and a great man. RIP, Raul Julia.
