One of the best things about being obsessed with a wildly successfully movie or TV series is the awesome amounts of merchandise that is released. From companion books, to clothes, mugs and accessories, I'm willing to be some of you have collected the lot. Something which is equally awesome are the dolls or action figures that are sold in the likeness of your favorite character. But, while toy manufacturers seem to try, the finished results always seem to fall a little flat. However, that's where amazing and talented artist Noel Cruz comes in.
Cruz takes character dolls and utterly transforms them using his incredible attention to detail. He endeavors to "raise the bar and bring a fresh take to the common mass produced doll," which I think, after seeing examples of his work, you will agree that he has done.
Sheldon Cooper - The Big Bang Theory
Whoa, the difference between the original and Noel's repainting is amazing - I'm half-expecting the revamped Sheldon to come out with a "bazinga" at any moment!
Is it just me or does the original Harry figurine kind of look like Harry Potter in drag? Either way, there's no denying that the repainted Harry doll looks almost exact as his real-life counterpart from the films.
Andy and Miranda - The Devil Wears Prada
I can't really even believe that the toy manufacturers expected us to believe that the doll on the right was really Meryl Streep's Miranda Priestly - come on, they hardly tried! Not to mention, Andy looked more Natalie Portman than Anne Hathaway. Cruz' newly painted dolls give the pair a much more Devil Wears Prada look, even channeling Streep's beautiful cheek bones.
Speaking of cheek bones - check out the set on Maleficent! While the original doll gave Malificent a great set, you gotta admit, her eyes seem kind of dull and lifeless. Thankfully Noel has given her peepers a spark of life, and with a change of skin tone, the new Maleficent is good to go!
Katniss - The Hunger Games
Well, they sort of got Katniss' braid right in the original? While I see hints of Jennifer Lawrence, Noel has nailed the complete look from trimming down her braid to a more acceptable thickness, and giving her face a more lifelike tinge. Not to mention getting rid of the eyeliner flicks - seriously, this girl is supposed to be fighting to the death, not going out to party!
Fairy Godmother, Lady Tremaine and Ella in Cinderella
I have to say, I think Noel Cruz' Cinderella dolls are my absolute favorites. While he's performed a total miracle on the Cinderella doll, transforming her into a Lily James lookalike, I just can't stop thinking that the Lady Tremaine and Fairy Godmother dolls are actually just pictures of Cate Blanchett and Helena Bonham-Carter themselves. Seriously, how good are they?!
Bella and Edward - The Twilight Saga
Finally, the royal vampire pair - Bella and Edward. From dull, waxy looking corpse dolls, Cruz has revived them into the gorgeous vampires they are onscreen. Their faces have been swapped from nondescript figures, to Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart clones. They're totally perfect, though, I do wonder if they sparkle in the sun...
