I'd never heard of From Software, Demon's Souls or anything about Dark Souls when I picked it up on its release date in 2011. I had money to spend and the desire for a game that'd keep me busy for hours on end. After briefly checking whether this game Dark Souls had received even average reviews, I was surprised to uncover that it was critically acclaimed! How had I never heard of this?
I recall this so vividly due to the events that followed it. I'd still probably tell you that Dark Souls is the greatest game I've ever played, depending on my mood, and I think that From Software's series has that affect no matter where your entry point may be. There are no other games like the Souls titles - and by extension the remarkable Bloodborne. I know I'll buy any one of these games that gets a release date in the future and for this reason, I am ashamed.
From Dark Souls 3 to Dark Souls 15, I'd Buy Them All On Their Release Date!
Hell, I even pre-ordered Bloodborne! It's a practice that I despise and it has polluted the gaming industry. It's inexcusable. But there's something about Miyazaki's design that I find so incredibly captivating. It's like the Metal Gear Solid series - I would have bought [Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain](tag:2683985) no matter what the reviews said, purely due to the love I have for Kojima's direction and superb series.
Dark Souls 3 will be the same. I've played half an hour of this title at Gamescom and I knew before I even touched it that I'd love it. From Software and their remarkable games have completely entrapped me. None of them (except perhaps, Bloodborne) have topped the experience of playing Dark Souls however. There are very few other games that have eclipsed the same sense of wonder and elation. And it's something that most Souls fans can relate to!
This Gameplay Will Never Get Old...Right?
Dark Souls 3 was a welcome change of pace from having just come from [Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin](tag:2768294) and Bloodborne. It combines the best of both worlds - while adding a new stance, more powerful enemies, a new sense of pace, and a beautiful backdrop. I can't even wait for Bloodborne's DLC! I NEVER get excited about DLC. But here I am. The Souls series has achieved something I never thought possible. I'm completely hooked on a franchise.
But where do you stand on the Souls series and Dark Souls 3? Are they making too many games within this series? Will they become stale after a while? Also, please share your stories of how you came into contact with the Souls series in the comments below! How did you become hooked on the lands of Hidetaka Miyazaki's design?
