Like with all fan theories, especially those found on Reddit, it's important to take them with a grain of salt. In this case, Redditor Primetime22 brought forth a theory that as a counterpart to the Wicked Witch of the West, Dorothy, was in fact the Wicked Witch of the East! It's not super farfetched; in fact, it seems legitimately possible.

I mean, think about it. At the end of the film, Dorothy wakes up with the classic "You were there, and you were there..." scene where she's surrounded by family and friends that she saw in her dream.

The Wizard of Oz is one of the original "it was just a dream" twists that we later saw a ton of in films. This theory states that it was not a dream, though, and that she was sent to another reality only to be sent back by Glinda by tapping her heels together.

When Dorothy goes to Kansas, she enters an alternate reality. I don't just mean that because it's Kansas, but because she meets people she knows there. Here are the people she met.

  • Scarecrow
  • Tin Man
  • Cowardly Lion
  • Wicked Witch of the West
  • The Wizard

One potential hole in this theory is that she never meets an alternate Dorothy or alternate versions of her aunt and uncle, but alas.

When Dorothy's house crushes the Wicked Witch of the East, we never see her face. We only know a few things about the Wicked Witch. One of those things is that she and Dorothy have the same shoe size. Don't you think it's possible that that is Dorothy? The only way to avoid paradoxes is to kill one of the Dorothy's. There's no way to have two Dorothy's exist.

So the proposition from Primetime22 is that Dorothy's copy was in fact the Wicked Witch of the East, and Dorothy replaced the other Dorothy - the Wicked Witch of the East - by crushing her at the beginning of the film.

Regardless of whether or not the Wicked Witch of the East is Dorothy, the Wicked Witch of the West is still a scary ass lady!

Is this theory any good?
