Just yesterday, I wrote that John Wick 2 will start shooting in the fall, and today, there's more news that the project is moving along quickly, with Collider confirming the director and producers behind the scenes.
Once again, the same head trio is back, with Derek Kolstad handling script writing duties, and Chad Stahelski as the director. The only difference is that last time, David Leitch served in a directorial role (albeit uncredited), whereas this time, he'll serve in a consulting and executive producer role capacity as he'll be busy shooting his own, separate film.
Jason Constantine with Lionsgate, who is selling the film at Cannes, feels there's a lot more to John Wick's story to tell:
With such tremendous fan and critical support for ‘John Wick,’ we knew that there was still so much more of this story to tell. We are thrilled that Keanu, David and Chad have re-teamed with us and promise to bring audiences even more excitement the second time around.
It bodes well that the same team is returning, because where the studio might push for bigger and bigger, keeping the same trio through the sequel (and hopefully future ones) is smart. The simplistic, straightforward story is why John Wick worked so well in the first place, and the same people being involved ensures that the future movies will stay grounded, at least as much as any action franchise can.
