The Star Wars prequels can be broken down and shattered like glass as far as a plot/story point goes. However, what they were trying to do was simple. Show how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader. This transformation was due to love, which became fear which led to anger which led to hatred and hate...Hate is the path to the Dark Side. Let's break it down.

Anakin met Padme. They became friends. They fell in love. They got married. They didn't plan on having children, but were ready to. Anakin wanted to protect Padme from hurt, so he hatched a plan. Before he could enact his plan however, his love, Padme, died. Thus Vader was born. A dark and angered being who was pushed to a darker place by the loss of his love.

Now we break down the beginning of UP.

Carl met Ellie. They became friends. They fell in love. They got married. They didn't plan on having children, but were ready to. Carl wanted to protect Ellie from hurt and bring her enjoyment. So he hatched a plan. Before he could enact his plan however, his love, Ellie, died. Thus Carl became a lonely, sad and depressed person. Just a fraction of the person Ellie brought out of him.

Pretty similar if not flat out the same of a basic story. The difference being that while Anakin and Padme's story took 3 films (not very good ones by the way), Carl and Ellie's took only 4-6 minutes. Not only that, but it was packed full of more emotion and feeling without the use of a single line of dialog. Just visuals and characters we cared about. Because we liked them.

Do you think UP is a better version of a similar story?
