I've made it clear that Dark Souls 3 has already made me feel ashamed as I continue on in a perpetual state of hype for the continuation of the series. But what do we all look for from another Souls game? We've all joined the Souls fan club at varying stages, we have different stories about how we engaged with it at first, and different ideas of what we want from its future.
With the enticing Bloodborne DLC on the way, 2015 still has more of From Software's glory to dole out. But after that, we'll have to wait until the release date of Dark Souls 3 on March 24th, 2016. But what expectations do you have? What game does it have to beat? Let's see what the Souls community have to say about the gameplay of Dark Souls 3!
Dark Souls 3 - What Souls Fans Want From Narrative & Gameplay!
When it comes to narrative in Video Games, it's generally paramount for me. I like to feel motivation for my actions. There needs to be a drive for me, a clear goal, otherwise I lose interest fairly quickly. But that's never been the case with the Souls series or Bloodborne.
I was never slaughtering mountains of monsters in a quest for knowledge; I wanted to see what challenges lay ahead. I wanted to know every crevice of the map, every enemy attack, every placement, every trap. The game's narrative was its design. I wanted to experience what the team at From Software had developed in the most complete way possible and then replay it to understand it more! Every challenge was exciting and endlessly engaging. But it's never been more profound than in Dark Souls.
Based on various discussions and forums around the old internet, you'll quickly realise the standing of Dark Souls in the community. Miyazaki's followup to the impeccable Demon's Souls is probably his masterpiece. The atmosphere and level design of Dark Souls has yet to be matched, though Bloodborne has come increasingly close! But it's the stories from the community that demonstrate their love for Dark Souls and their desire for Dark Souls 3 to replicate its power.
Nostrafus on Reddit does a fantastic job of describing the power of From Software's design in relation to the Taurus Demon in Dark Souls (what a fight!):
They wanted players to be able to do an optional plunging attack, but they needed a way for them to notice that they could climb up to a higher vantage point. So they add some weak, annoying hollow archers to get your attention, which then causes the player to realize that they can reach the top of the tower. Once the boss fight starts, many players will probably retreat due to the cramped rampart walkway, and they'll naturally try to climb the tower. At that point most will remember the experience they had with the very first boss, make the connection, and then do a plunging attack.
What Do You Want From the Dark Souls 3 Release Date?
It's so true! There are moments in the Souls series that represent the genius of the minds at From Software. Dark Souls is by far my favourite game in the franchise (and one of my favourite games in general), though perhaps DLC sections from [Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin](tag:2768294) are the actual highlight of the Souls games.
What we want from Dark Souls 3 is a replication of the mastery behind the gameplay and narrative design of Dark Souls. Demon's Souls certainly has the best boss, Old Monk, but Dark Souls really matured its content and allowed the basic ideas to flourish in a far more complete and challenging world. Agree or disagree? Let us know where you stand on Dark Souls 3 and the Souls series in general! Is Dark Souls the game it has to beat?
