At Salt Lake Comic-Con this past week, Robbie Amell (younger cousin of the Green Arrow himself, Stephen Amell) stirred up the Internet by making comments about a Batman Beyond movie! As Comicbook.com reports, Firestorm himself had this to say this about the idea:
"I think the problem is because they have Batman going on right now, they won't make the Batman Beyond movie until I'm too old to be Terry McGinnis. By then I'll probably be the old, crusty Batman. But I'm a huge fan of that idea. I think it would be a great property. I think the smartest idea for them would be to make it like a $30 million movie. Don't do like a $200 million blockbuster, do a dark, gritty version of Batman Beyond. The visual effects have come so far that you don't need $200 million to show the technology that they have. Make it a nice, grounded character piece. But I don't run studios, so that means nothing."
As a long-time fan of the Batman: The Animated Series spin-off, I am completely in favor of this. It would give people a break from Bruce Wayne, but still let us have a Batman movie. Much like Miles Morales would have breathed new life and created a new dynamic in the MCU, Terry McGinnis could do the same in the DCEU. If you think about it, we've had Batman movies since the 1980s, and will have at least a few more over the next decade. Maybe it's time to consider bringing in a new Bat, even if it isn't Amell...though, it kinda should be.
Who is Batman Beyond?
Now, you may be sitting there saying, "What on Earth is a Batman Beyond, and who or what is a Terry McGinnis?" Allow me to shed some light on the subject. Before I get too far ahead of myself, Batman has been pretty much been gone for twenty years. Terry McGinnis was born in 2023 to scientists Warren and Mary. He spent most of his teen years in and out of trouble with the law, despite his good home. Well, Terry has a run-in with the followers of the Joker. The Jokerz, as they call themselves, chase the teen onto the property of Bruce Wayne, who promptly expels the gang. Wayne, who's old, can't handle the stress of fighting so hard, so Terry helps him back into the manor. While inside, McGinnis finds the Bat-cave. As you'd expect, Wayne is quite mad, but after Warren McGinnis is murdered, he takes on Terry as his 'personal assistant.' Really, he's just training the boy to be the next Batman.
Make sense? I sure hope so, because it sure didn't to me. Basically, troubled boy meets retired vigilante and, after his dad gets killed, he becomes the next Batman. Now, how do we get this to work in the Snyder-verse? Let me explain. Reportedly, a stand-alone Bat-film will be headed up by Ben Affleck, but that might not be till 2018. Then there are rumors of a trilogy for Batman. Now, Affleck is in his forties already, so he could be playing the Dark Knight through his fifties. I'm not saying that he doesn't look the part, but that's getting up in years for wearing the cape and cowl.
Now, let's assume that another Bat-trilogy happens, starting in 2018. Let's also assume that it's a huge success, and that the world doesn't end thanks to moths blocking out the sun or something. We're talking about a third movie somewhere around 2025. That's a long ways from now, but it would set up perfectly for a Batman Beyond film. It's within a decade of the original show's timeline, and there would already be an established, older Bruce Wayne in the 'verse. The DCEU would have been running for nearly twenty years...that's time for a reboot or a revive. Simply, it would be the right time to introduce Terry McGinnis into the franchise to revitalize the series. The cool thing would be that Batman could still be active, giving opportunity for something like this:
If a Batman Beyond movie were to happen, it would be too late for Amell to be McGinnis, but, his idea is solid. Best done at the end of Affleck's tenure, this fan-favorite would be brilliantly timed. We would see a dynamic between leads that doesn't really exist anywhere else in the Bat-verse. And don't forget the awesome Blade Runner feel to Gotham City. Oh, and have you seen the suit? Incredible! Basically, we need McGinnis in the DCEU, and not just for the "Jason Todd is the Joker" theories. Now, I've said what I think...now it's your turn! Let me know how you feel about Amell playing McGinnis, or a Batman Beyond film in the comments! Or, if you're feeling really creative, write an article about it!
