I've been hanging on to this theory for awhile as I was waiting for Ares to be confirmed for the Wonder Woman solo movie. Although we have not received official confirmation we did receive a scoop from Heroic Hollywood that 300 actress Eva Green and Lord of the Rings actor Sean Bean are being courted to be two of Wonder Woman's most formidable villains.
Wonder Woman vs Circe
Wonder Woman vs Ares
I really hope that the rumors of Green playing Circe and Bean playing Ares end up being true. Both are very convincing when acting and have played very believable villains in previous movies. But Ares is the focal point for this particular theory. As stated in the title of this article I believe that Ares the god of War could be behind the Batman v Superman conflict. When you really think about it Ares starting a fight between two stud heroes like Superman and Batman makes sense; I mean he is the God of War.
God of War
While this trailer has nothing to do with DC comics I wanted to give readers an idea of who Ares is. He is freaking royalty as a direct descendant of Zeus. Certain perks come with being royalty like having people around to do his dirty work.
The Duke of Deception is a servant to Ares and one of the first antagonist to Wonder Woman in the comics. He embodies deceit, confusion and treachery, using his god-like powers of illusion to further the cause of war. He caused Wonder Woman all kinds of problems using his powers of illusion during World War II. While Wonder Woman was fighting for peace Duke of Deception was spreading lie's on the behalf of Ares to further war. Which leads me into further detail about my theory of Ares being responsible for the conflict of Batman and Superman in Dawn of Justice.
So not long ago the director for Batman v Superman, Zack Snyder, made an interesting comment concerning Wonder Woman.
"In a lot of ways, she’s the gateway drug to the rest of the Justice League."
That comment got me thinking about what could he mean by that. So I took everything that I knew so far and came to a particular question. Why is Wonder Woman snooping around Gotham and Metropolis? Assumptions have been made by fanboys across the globe that Wonder Woman may be investigation Lex Luthor. But why would she be interested in Lex? Would it not make more sense that she was drawn to the DC twin cities by her own antagonist Ares and Duke of Deception who are trying to instigate a war between Batman and Superman? I believe we have seen evidence of this in the second Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer.
Could this letter been sent to Bruce Wayne by the Duke of Deception to anger Bruce Wayne more than he already is about the Kryptonian's battle in Metropolis that took the lives of his employees? While most feel that this message "You let your family die" was sent to Bruce Wayne by the Joker that never really made sense to me because that would mean the Joker knew Batman's alter ego. Other's speculated that it could have been sent by Red Hood aka Jason Todd which I thought was more likely considering Jason Todd was Robin before becoming Red Hood and knew Bruce was Batman. Also, there was an obvious reference to the Jason Todd Robin in the trailer as well.
But why would Jason blame Bruce for something that clearly was not his fault? And not to mention Jason Todd from the comics was more concerned with Batman not avenging his death when Batman thought the Joker killed him. The movie definitely does not have to mimic the comics but I just don't see why Red Hood would mock the death of people that he likely knew also. Which takes me to the thought that Ares sent Duke of Deception to the twin cities of Gotham and Metropolis to start a war between the two heroes. How could Ares resist? After Superman and Zod destroyed a city in a couple of hours Ares would have to believe that a motivated Batman could give Superman all he could handle. Wonder Woman could simply be there because she see's the signs of Ares dirty work. Also, keep in mind that the DC Extended Universe will tie into each other over the next few years.
So we all should expect for Batman v Superman to tie into the Wonder Woman movie somehow. Especially since Wonder Woman will be the third movie to debut in the DC Extended Universe. What better way to tie those two movies together than with a villain like Ares that has so much influence on the act of war. We have already seen that Batman v Superman is tying into Suicide Squad.
And with Zack Snyder's comments that Wonder Woman is the gate way drug to the rest of the Justice League a tie in between the two movies really could be considered confirmed. Now I know some will say that Ares is not going to be in Batman v Superman but keep in mind my theory is that Ares sent Duke of Deception to instigate war between Batman and Superman. And keep in mind that Duke of Deception is a master illusionist that can take many forms so his presence in Batman v Superman could go undetected until Wonder Woman makes the two heroes aware that they have been manipulated.
On top of that theory I think that Wonder Woman villain Ares may use Earth as a battle ground for a galactic battle. I think Ares could be attempting to make Earth an attractive planet to conquer and destroy for the likes of New God and Justice League villain; Darkseid.
In the comics Darkseid and the New Gods have looked at Earth as but a speck in an air pocket and that the universe of New Genesis and Apokolips is the "real world" which is were Darkseid and the New Gods are from. Proportionally, Earth is no larger than a golf ball compared to Darkseid's home planet Apokolips. However, if Ares is able to cause conflict between Batman and Superman (who the latrer has god like powers) Earth may be worth paying attention to. That attention could lead to the formation of the Justice League and hence making Wonder Woman truly "the gate way drug" to the Justice League that Zack Snyder was speaking of and again making Earth worthy of at least the attention of Darkseid. Of course the Justice League is use to protecting Earth from Darkseid.
Of course this is just my theory on what could happen in the DC Extended Universe. But I'm curious to what you think. Could Ares be responsible responsible for the Batman and Superman conflict and the eventual formation of the Justice League? Please share your thoughts below.
