By now I think most of us are familiar with the character of Deadpool (a.k.a Wade Wilson) even those of us who don't read the comics. His long awaited solo feature will be released 12th February 2016, and the extremely successful viral marketing surrounding it has made Deadpool one of the most hotly anticipated superhero/anti-hero movies of the coming year.
Deadpool's hero-parody figure has already captured the affections of the general public, a welcome breath of fresh air from the epic, righteous heroes we've seen come before him (the R-rating helps to make the whole thing feel a little more edgy too).
But he's not the only exciting new character being brought to the screen here, we've got two additions to the cast in the form of X-Men characters, one of whom we've seen before in a reduced capacity and one who is entirely new to the big screen.
Colossus, real name Piotr "Peter" Nikolaievitch Rasputin (try saying that three times quickly) is usually seen in association with the X-Men, and he has appeared in secondary roles in many of the X-Men films: [X2: X-Men United](tag:3567581), [X-Men: The Last Stand](tag:3567583) and [X-Men: Days Of Future Past](tag:203942) (portrayed by Daniel Cudmore in all three). This time round he'll be portrayed by Andre Tricoteux, an actor and stuntman - which is pretty promising given the physicality of the characters in Deadpool.
A descendant of the mystic Grigori Rasputin, Piotr was born on a Soviet farm in Siberia. His powers manifested in his teens while he attempted to save his sister from being crushed by a runaway tractor. Shortly after this he was contacted by Professor Xavier and agreed to travel to the US with him to help save the X-Men from the island Krakoa. He was given the name Colossus, and decided to stay and join the team after the battle was won.
His power is the ability to turn his entire body into an organic form of armoured steel. When in his armoured state his weight is doubled and he also gains about a foot in height, he possesses superhuman strength, stamina and durability, is highly damage-resistant and doesn't require food, water, or oxygen to live. He is however vulnerable to the super rare anti-metal vibranium from which Captain America's shield is made.
Despite his tough form, Colossus is usually portrayed as being peaceful, selfless, reluctant to hurt or kill anyone, and always putting himself in danger to protect others. He has a close bond with his family despite being far from them, a fact that is often used against him, usually through his little sister Illyana (Magik). He was also romantically involved with Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat, they've broken up and gotten back together many times over the years but remained good friends throughout.
Though initial speculation from the trailer was that Colossus would be a minor character in the Deadpool movie, Deadpool character creator Rob Liefeld says otherwise:
"You guys have seen a glimpse of him in the trailer; at San Diego in Hall H, they showed a little bit more of Colossus... You are going to love Colossus in Deadpool. He's in it a good amount; he doesn't just walk through the movie."
This sounds pretty good actually, given that he did only have a secondary role in the X-Men films he appeared in. That's the trouble with having an ensemble cast I guess.
Negasonic Teenage Warhead
Created by Grant Morrison, who wrote the 2001-series New X-Men, she was named after the Monster Magnet song Negasonic Teenage Warhead, so eh, I guess that explains the name then?
The teenager Negasonic Teenage Warhead's real name is Ellie Phimister. She first appeared in New X-Men as a citizen of Genosha, a fictional country/island appearing in the Marvel comics located off the coast of South Africa. She was a short lived character, a student of prevalent X-Men telepath Emma Frost. One day she mentioned during a class that she had a nightmare where Genosha was exterminated. Immediately afterwards she said this the Sentinels appeared on the island and wiped out half the mutant population - Ellie included - leaving Emma Frost heartbroken.
She later appears to be alive as a member of the villainous Hellfire Club alongside Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost. Here she demonstrates the power to make things happen through suggestion, as she forces Kitty/Shadowcat to lose control of her powers and phase right down into the Earth's core.
However it's later revealed that she existed here only as an illusion projected by Emma Frost, the real Negasonic Teenage Warhead was still dead. She was later brought back to life by super-villains Selene and Eli Bard, but died again when her soul was absorbed by the Black Queen. Tough run.
Her powers were never fully defined, but she's generally assumed to be a telepath due to the visions she experiences that then come true. She has stated that she experiences precognitive nightmares and premonitions. It's not known if the powers displayed whilst she appeared as an illusion are accurate to her origin form, however it'd be pretty cool if they were.
She'll be portrayed by Brianna Hildebrand in the Deadpool movie, presumably she'll retain her telepathic powers here but I wouldn't be surprised if they tweak her powers/backstory to fit into the context of the film. She does appear in the promo photos wearing a yellow and black jumpsuit with the X-Men logo on it, so it's pretty safe to assume that she'll be appearing as a fully fledged member of the team here, though how that relates to Deadpool we'll just have to wait to find out...
