Since 2000's X-Men, Hugh Jackman has played the cigar smoking, brooding mutant Wolverine seven times. Jackman has completely mutated (no pun intended) his body to play this unconventional hero and is pretty much perfect for the role. Sadly, Jackman has decided to retire from the role, and has stated that Jerry Seinfeld of all people is part of the reason he has reached this decision by saying,

“I was having a chat with him about a year ago at his birthday and he was talking about why he finished [Seinfeld] and how it was riding high, and he said he just always had this feeling or belief that you never know when either your energy or the audience’s energy is going to dip over and people are like, ‘Please! Go!’ ”

I’ve been doing it for 17 years, I love it. I think the movies are getting better. And all of the sudden, as he was talking to me, I went, ‘This is it.’”

Jackman has made his own recommendation for who he would like to see replace him, and he is on this list. Replacing him as Wolverine isn't going to be easy, but there are plenty of immensely talented actors that could do the role justice. Here are 10 actors that could mutate into Wolverine.

10. Jensen Ackles

Jensen Ackles is best known as Dean Winchester of Supernatural. Ackles not only looks the part, but he has proved that he can transform his body. With his impeccable acting abilities, he is a more than capable candidate.

9. Liam Hemsworth

Liam Hemsworth is the little brother of Avengers star Chris Hemsworth. He has proved that he can handle high action roles with his performances in films such as Hunger Games, The Expendables 2, Paranoia and he will be starring in the upcoming Independence Day: Resurgence, the sequel to 1996's Independence Day.

8. Joel Edgerton

Edgerton has proven his ability to physically transform himself and that he can handle action roles. He took on the role of MMA fighter Brendan Conlon in Warrior and Rames in Exodus: Gods and Kings.

7. Kit Harington

He obviously has the right look. Kit Harington is best known as Jon Snow of HBO's hit series Game of Thrones who, much like Wolverine, is angry and brooding. Harington has also stated that he would love to be in a superhero movie.

6. Taylor Kitsch

Kitsch has already played a mutant, he was Remy LeBeau a.k.a. Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and did a stellar job in his small time on screen. He also proved his action star capabilities in Lone Survivor. His build and natural brooding would make him great for the role.

5. Penn Badgley

Badgley bares a striking resemblance to a young Hugh Jackman, so he clearly has the right look to replace him. This Baltimore native is used to romantic comedy-style roles, but he has proven his ability to physically transform and has impeccable acting chops.

4. Charlie Hunnam

Hunnam has played roles in every genre of film as well as portrayed the king of bikers Jax Teller on Sons of Anarchy. He has proven to be a chameleon as he has an insane ability to change his appearance time after time. His good looks and insane body got him cast as the original Christian Grey. He can give an over-the-top intense performance and could without a doubt master the Wolverine attitude.

3. Scott Eastwood

Scott is the son of Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood and, like his father, he is shaping up to be a phenomenal actor. He is already cast in the upcoming DC film Suicide Squad, so he will have knowledge of the genre, and he has been in several high action roles.

2. Kellan Lutz

Kellan Lutz is no doubt physically built for the role and is no stranger to rigorous workouts and demanding roles. He was Hercules in 2014's The Legend of Hercules, Smilee in The Expendables 3, Poseidon in 2011's Immortals, and David Lord in Arena just to name a few. He also has a stunt background with 2013's Tarzan.

1. Tom Hardy

Say hello to Hugh Jackman's personal choice for the new Wolverine. Hardy has proven time and time again that he can play any role that is thrown his way, and has a crazy ability to completely change his body to match the character he is taking on. His physical transformations for his roles in Bronson, Warrior, as the Batman villain, Bane, in The Dark Knight Rises and most recently in Mad Max: Fury Road were beyond intense. Hardy is one of Hollywood's biggest stars at the moment. He is hands down the perfect choice to replace Jackman.

The role will not be recast for another few years as Hugh Jackman is reportedly going to continue the role in Wolverine 3 before he retires.
