Why do people hate on this movie so much. No seriously it's insane how many people claim this is the new worst Adam Sandler comedy. Apparently people forgot about Jack & Jill, That's My Boy, and Grown Ups 2 which are still in my opinion far worse.
Brief Spoiler Free Summary
Sam Brenner is the former Pac-Man champion of the world and his best friend just so happens to be William Cooper, the president of the United States, are forced to team up with childhood friends and rivals to take on aliens that are attacking our planet in the form of retro games.
First off we have Adam Sandler ("Grown Ups", "Jack & Jill", and "Click") who plays Sam Brenner and in all honestly Sandler isn't...that bad in this film. He's not good at all but compared to Grown Ups 2 or That's My Boy he's not that bad. Hell he actually has a few decent/funny lines. Keyword "few". Oh and he basically says "The Last of Us" sucks in the movie. Obviously he hasn't ever played the game since as we all know that game doesn't suck.
Next we have Kevin James ("Grown Ups", "Paul Blart: Mall Cop", and "King of Queens") playing the president and oh god has this guy stopped being funny. I love "King of Queens", hell it's probably in my top five favorite sitcoms but ever since he teamed up with Happy Madison for almost every film he's done since...I'd like to say 2008, he's been struggling to be funny and sadly this film doesn't help him. He has one funny scene in this movie when it's revealed he can't read and that's really about it.
Now we have Michelle Monaghan ("Mission Impossible III", "Gone Baby Gone", and "The Best of Me") who plays Violet van Patten and...I'm sorry but WHY DOES SHE GET WITH SANDLER AT THE END OF THE MOVIE? Half the movie they hate each other and they have terrible romance scenes. However I won't say it's her fault she sucked in this movie, I mean it's a female character in a Sandler film. It's kinda like a female character in a Michael Bay film, they're expected to suck.
Finally we have Josh Gad ("Frozen", "Ice Age: Continental Drift", and "Marmaduke") and he plays Ludlow Lamonsoff. He's obsessed with conspiracies and he's obsessed with a character from a fictional video game "Dojo's Quest" and this character sucks. He just sucks, that's it, moving on.
The Video Game Alien things
I have to give them credit. The effects are amazing. The characters from the video games look amazing and they act like you'd think they'd act if they were attacking the world. Honestly just watching the giant CGI retro characters attacking Adam Sandler makes the film worth it and watchable for the most part.
Besides mostly terrible acting and terrible jokes, there isn't really much to complain about. Oh wait...there's the story. The story in Pixels doesn't really make sense and the two kinda twists and turns towards the end of the film aren't very good. But hey it's an Adam Sandler comedy, the story shouldn't be a big focus right? Well...we kinda needed the story though considering, number one it's a movie, and number two you need to explain what is happening and why it's happening. The film really doesn't do a good job doing that.
This film isn't terrible...or good. I wouldn't even say it's okay. The best word to describe this movie is "Mediocre". The film is watchable but it fails in the comedy department and the acting department. But it is not nearly one of the worst Sandler films. Holy shit seriously calm down everyone, this isn't the film we've been waiting for that would kill Adam Sandler's acting career and this isn't going to go down in history as one of the worst movies ever made. Pixels is watchable, that's it.
Next time I'll be ranking the worst to best slasher movie villains. Those that will be included are (Jason, Chucky, Freddy, Michael, Pinhead, Jigsaw, Leatherface, Leprechaun, and Ghostface)
