Despite the massive success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a sore point for fans is the lack of female heroes. So far, the only ones seen are Black Widow and Gamora, and none of them had a solo movie. So when the Captain Marvel movie was announced for 2018, people were really interested to see how Marvel would introduce her into their universe.
While 2018 is still quite far away, we almost got to see a glimpse at Captain Marvel in [The Avengers: Age Of Ultron](tag:293035). According to Marvel boss Kevin Feige, Captain Marvel was originally considered to be introduced in the film.
You may be alluding to rumor about Captain Marvel showing up in [Avengers: Age Of Ultron]. At one point, it might have been one draft. And we shot a plate; the thought was we maybe we would have her in there, but the truth is it didn’t seem appropriate to have this new person in a new costume literally come out of nowhere at the end of this story. It would have been a disservice to - what by the time this movie was coming out - people already knew was coming anyway, and a way we could really do it justice.
Jeremy Latcham, co-producer of Age of Ultron also commented on this:
In really early development there was a notion there would be like a ton of new people. And then it was like 'we haven't really introduced them, we don't know where they are going to come from' and Joss [Whedon] did not love that idea. It was an early discussion, and that became 'just be Captain Marvel,' and then that felt weird. Like to just have one new person...
To be honest, that was a wise decision. There would be no character development whatsoever, it would be a forced introduction. Better to take your time with it, instead of rushing in and giving bad quality work.
But... there's more news! When asked when the casting choice will be announced, here is what Feige had to say:
"There won’t be any announcements about that this year. I think right now we’re scripting the film, figuring out who we want Carol Danvers to be, and really what the structure of the movie will be and what her part will be in some of our other Phase 3 films. And it would be next year that we start to really think about casting."
I think getting the character right first is going to lead the charge. We want to make sure we know who it is before we can start figuring out who should play it."
He went further on to reveal something which is making fans extremely jubilant. Remember those fan casts you spent hours on? Well, guess what, they didn't go in vain!
"When a fan list comes out… we look at it! We read it, we go through it, we read the comments, we look at who people like... Sometimes it’s really enlightening. Sometimes it’s the exact same person that they’ve been saying over and over again that we don’t think is right. It’s always fun to kinda go through it and see what people are up to.
The script for the film is being written by Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy), both extremely popular and well-received movies.
Captain Marvel hits the theatres July 6, 2018, while the next Marvel movie, Captain America: Civil War comes out May 6, 2016.
