So , I was excited when I heard two of my favorite actors Rob Lowe and Fred Savage ( I was a HUGE Wonder Years fan) were doing a FOX sitcom together and finally got the chance to download it on itunes tonight and watched it.
I liked it. It kind of has a 2 and a Half Men vibe to it.
Rob Lowe is Dean Sanderson, an ultra cool TV star who played a very popular over the top wise ass lawyer on a tv show called The Grinder! When the show is cancelled , Dean returns home to his small town , trying to figure out what the heck to do with his life. He moves in for a few days with his brother and his family and winds up getting involved in a small town court case his brother is involved in and teaches us all ...
Fred Savage is Stewart Sanderson, an actual lawyer at their father's law firm. Turns out Stewart isn't all that great a lawyer and has issues with public speaking ( he has to write everything he says in court on flashcards) and just doesn't have the hipness and coolness of Dean. Worst of all, he always settles the case!
The court case in this episode is a low level Rent dispute/ eviction case. Was awesome seeing Tonita Castro ( who was the best part of FOX's DADS sitcom) guest star in this episode.
The real charm is watching the brothers interact with and play off each other and seeing their different styles in court. Yes, it's a little silly that Dean, who has no law degree , would be even allowed speak in speak in court , much less present arguments and that the Judge and everyone else would be love struck by his celebrity and that in the end, he'll make fools of the other side but hey, I'll go with it because it's fun to watch. In the future, we just know Dean is going to make Stewart a better lawyer and that what counts. Brothers in action!
It works because Lowe and Savage have great chemistry together and that is the heart of this show.
The side plot involves Ethan, Stewart's social awkward 13 year old son. Just like his dad, it seems Ethan isn't all that cool at school and has a plan to become more popular by having a sleepover with a 10th grade high school football jock named Joel. Joel is played by Johnowen Lowe, Rob Lowe's son and he's a good actor. It's just too bad he was only here for one episode. would of been fun to see more of him hanging around the Sanderson household.
Turns out Joel is only there so he can hook up with Ethan's 10th grade sister. Ethan and his parents should of figured that one out, I mean how many 10th graders have a sleepover with a 6th/7th grader?
Of course, Dean saves the day and helps Ethan to "push back" against Joel using Social Media. Would of been funny to actually have seen that picture of Joel giving Ethan a piggy back ride!
Connor Kalopsis as Ethan plays the awkward wants to be cool kid well and is good on screen with Rob Lowe..Ethan is a kid who just has I'm going to be in many awkward embarrassing situations written all his face and he's going to need his uncle to get out of them and learn to grow up and become a man..It's going to be fun to watch!
The whole ending is traditional pilot episode fare. Stewart wants Dean gone and the last minute of the show has Dean is about to leave..Will he leave? Think we know the answer to that.
The set up for this series was good and I can't wait to see future episodes! This is a show I will be watching and I hope FOX picks up a full season worth of The Grinder!
