After many years of lobbying around, the Hollywood adaptation of the hit manga/anime has finally started production. A director (Adam Winger) has also been hired. My first reaction to the news of the director's announcement was that of indifference. As long as we were getting a Death Note film, I didn't care. Then came the announcement that Nat Wolff was cast as Light Yagami, the protagonist. I totally freaked out at that.
I totally hate this casting. There is no way in hell that I can ever think of the guy from films such as The Fault in our Stars and Paper Towns as Light, who is the anti hero of the piece. A few reasons that this wouldn't work out are :
1) Light Yagami is handsome. Now, no offence to Wolff but he doesn't exactly look like a chick magnet to me.
2) He doesn't seem to be that great an actor. This is a very difficult role that requires method acting at the least.
3) He doesn't have half the charisma that Light Yagami has.
Okay, I admit they got one thing right. They cast him as a high schooler, which is accurate. But it still isn't enough. Here a few actors that fit the role better :
1) Jake Gyllenhall
Jake Gyllenhall would be a great fit in the role, as evidenced by his performance in Nightcrawler.
2) Nicholas Hoult
Nicholas Hoult is a talented actor with great versatality. Check him out in Mad Max : Fury Road.
Anyways, what do you think of Nat Wolff as Light Yagami? Let me know in the comments section!
