[Gravity Falls](tag:1085907) is rocketing towards a thrilling finale! Each new episode provides answers to the mysteries set up by season 1, but produces more questions too. With Bill Cipher's plans finally revealed, and Dipper under the Author's tutelage, Gravity Falls season 2 is building towards something big! Creator Alex Hirsch is only fueling fan fears for the next episode, promising that "everything changes" and teasing a schism between Dipper and Mabel.
Summer doesn't last forever. Dipper & Mabel vs The Future premieres Oct 12th! https://t.co/v0FOFmXkOX— Alex Hirsch (@_AlexHirsch) September 29, 2015
I don't know about you, but that teaser trailer has me DEEPLY CONCERNED for the twins. There's shots of them arguing, of Mabel running frantically through the forest while Dipper is in peril, and who can forget their birthday which Alex Hirsch confirms marks the end of the summer!
Oh gosh. I might not make it through the next episode. Suffice to say, fans are going nuts with speculation about what Dipper & Mabel vs The Future might be about, and while we're pretty sure we know what's going to happen, there are plenty of crucial Easter Eggs that contain vital information for the finale. Did you spot them all?
With those quick fire flashes, it's easy to miss vital clues in the teaser trailer, but thanks to fans going through the footage frame by frame we have an idea of the terrifying events about to unfold. Remember that fragile glass ball that contains the Rift, aka, the key in Bill Cipher's plan to unleash all the horrors his hell dimension can offer? Well, Bill-proofing the Mystery Shack didn't quite do the trick, because the ball is cracked!!
This is not good, folks. Bill might only be able to access our dimension via the Mindscape, but the crack in the glass only makes his plan easier to carry out. So what does this mean for Dipper & Mabel vs The Future? In the trailer, Ford says...
"We have a very important mission and you are the only one who can help me!"
Could it be that Ford's mission is to try and repair the glass, or find another way of containing the Rift? One thing's for certain - Ford and Dipper going off on adventures together can only hurt the relationship between Dipper and Mabel, which seems to be the focal point of the next episode. Previously embarking on all their adventures together, in recent season 2 episodes Dipper and Mabel have been growing further apart, with Mabel firmly out of the mystery-solving loop: she doesn't even know what Bill's plans are!
This could feed right into Bill's plans - from the start he seems to have had a hand in the twins' relationships, both the Stans and Dipper and Mabel. In Sock Opera there was a ton of foreshadowing about Dipper and Mabel falling out because of Dipper prioritising mystery solving over his sister. And the next Easter Egg might just prove that Stanley and Stanford's schism was Bill Cipher's plan all along!
Before we dive deep into plot hints and fan theories, kudos must go to thesnadger on Tumblr for pointing this out. So, remember Ford's science project? Back in A Tale Of Two Stans, the beginning of the rift between the twins was revealed to be Ford's science project, which Stan supposedly tampered with, ruining Ford's hopes to be accepted into a prestigious university. But was it really Stan's fault? Check out these screenshots...
If you look closely, you can see that the grate is on the machine, and it seems to be working fine. But the next day...
Grate askew, smoke coming from the machine. Something's definitely different from when Stan left the night before. Could it be that someone else tampered with the project, someone who has a vested interest in Ford being alone and vulnerable to manipulation? Someone like a familiar triangle shaped trickster demon?!
So that's the idea. Bill Cipher was behind the sabotage all along! But why?
"When he told me that I could complete my research by building a gateway to other worlds, I trusted him."
Clearly, Bill needed someone's help to build the portal, and that someone was Stanford Pines. What if Ford caught Bill's attention far before he arrived in Gravity Falls? So Bill acted to ensure that his "genius" wouldn't get distracted by scientific success, but would rather find his way to the town where supernatural occurrences were the norm, and the barrier between the dimensions is thin.
Breaking Up The Mystery Twins
So that's one twin breakup explained by Bill's interference. And he definitely has his eye on Dipper and Mabel, specifically, on tempting Dipper with mysteries in order to get him to abandon his sister.
Bill: "Who would sacrifice everything they've worked for just for their dumb sibling?"
Mabel: "Dipper would!"
In Sock Opera Mabel puts aside what she'd worked on in order to save Dipper, but Bill managed to get Dipper to make a deal with him by sowing the seeds of discord between the twins.
"What's your sister done for you, lately? How many times have you sacrificed for her, huh? And when has she ever returned the favor?"
While Sock Opera inevitably had a happy ending, it proved that Dipper would quickly abandon Mabel to chase mysteries, while Mabel would always come through for her brother.
With the end of the summer threatening the twins' future, will Mabel do something drastic when she gets fed up with Dipper and Ford running missions without her? If this happens, there's no doubt that Bill be right there, ready to exploit Mabel's unhappiness for his own gain.
Dipper & Mabel vs The Future is going to be a real game changer, and all this foreshadowing definitely has us worried for the Pines family! You can catch S02E17 next week - it airs on October 12th. Don't forget to tell us your thoughts in the comments!
