In efforts to make it big in the movie business or to transform themselves into a certain role, actresses are often encouraged trade in their natural tresses for another hue. Because let's be real, the wrong kind of image can make or break a career.

The following 13 ladies knew this all too well, bit the bullet and changed their hair color so expertly that even the most avid of fans were probably fooled that this wasn't their natural coloring:

1. Kristen Stewart

The Twilight actress may be known for her dark and moody look, but K-Stew was actually born with strawberry blonde hair. And she actually returned to her roots in her role in Jack Kerouac's On the Road.

2. Emma Stone

Emma Stone is well known for her copper tresses, a feature that has marked her out as one of the hottest redheads in the industry. And apparently, it's all down to Judd Apatow! When working on Superbad, the producer told her she would look more edgy with a more eye-popping hue. She explained in 2010:

"I was a brunette during casting. Then Judd walked in, said 'Make it red,’ and walked out. So he made me this way."

For The Amazing Spider-Man however, the actress went back to her blonde shades:

3. Scarlett Johansson

Scar-Jo is known for being the sexiest blonde bombshell in the industry, which is ironic, because she was actually a born brunette.

4. Leighton Meester

Gossip Girl's Blair Waldorf is synonymous with darker hues, but in real-life, Leighton Meester is anything but -- sometimes going back to her roots and embracing her natural blonde coloring.

5. Katy Perry

She may be a chameleon when it comes to hair color, going for a myriad of vibrant shades over the years, but back when she was Katy Hudson, the songstress rocked a natural blonde.

6. Sofia Vergara

You usually see Sofia with a head of chocolate brown tresses, but in fact, deep down her natural hair color is dirty blonde.

7. Olivia Wilde

Although many of us first set eyes on Olivia as a blue-eyed blonde babe in The O.C., over the years, we have grown used to her dyed brown hair. Today, it's hard to imagine her without it!

8. Lady Gaga

The Mother Monster may love to dress-up her peroxide blonde locks with wacky outfits, but she can't deny the fact that her roots will always go through as jet black.

9. Anna Paquin

True Blood's Sookie Stackhouse probably seemed more appetizing to all those vamps thanks to her luscious blonde locks, as well as her faerie blood. In real life, she's a brunette.

10. Charlize Theron

South African beauty Charlize Theron actually rocked a chestnut hair color back in the day. To tap into the Hollywood appeal, she went blonde.

11. Christina Hendricks

As Joan Holloway, Christina Hendricks stopped us in our tracks in AMC's drama Mad Men, mesmerizing us with her fiery red locks and insane curves. In real-life however, although the actress doesn't lose any of her incredible appeal in other roles, she does it while embracing her natural blonde.

12. Carey Mulligan

The name Carey Mulligan goes hand-in-hand with her iconic pixie crop, which in reality, is of a darker shade than it is dyed to be. Here she is as a brunette in coming-of-age story An Education:

13. Angelina Jolie

We know Angie for those plump lips and flowing chocolate colored locks. So it's quite surprising to find out that underneath all of the coloring, she's in fact a dirty blonde! Are you surprised?
