Now, for anyone who grew up loving Star Wars, there are only really two versions of Luke Skywalker that really make any kind of sense. On the one hand, there's the fresh-faced farmhand of A New Hope, whether in his original white robes or his flashy X-Wing pilot jumpsuit. On the other, there's the older, wiser, cyborg-handed Jedi in black that he later becomes. Whether in action figure, comic book or cinematic form, for millions of fans around the world that is Luke Skywalker.

Except, of course, come this December, it won't be.

After all, though Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens is set to return Mark Hamill to the role that made him an icon, it's set to do so in the wake of thirty-odd years of life experience and aging. In other words?

Episode VII's Luke Skywalker Might Not Be Quite What We Were Expecting

Or, at least, that was what many fans had begun to assume after poring over recent pictures of Hamill in which he looked like...well, like a regular 64-year-old dude:

For some, it seems, that was a source of fairly substantial worry - presumably on the basis that Hamill didn't exactly look like the Luke Skywalker we all grew up with.

Which, as it turns out, he still doesn't, a year or two after the above photo was taken, but holy Mandalorian flame gherkins...

Mark Hamill Is Sure Starting to Look a Hell of a Lot Like a Jedi

Y'see, over the past year or two, as filming for Episode VII has kicked into gear, completed, and then moved straight on into filming for Episode VIII, Hamill seems to have transformed himself into what might not be the Luke Skywalker we grew up with, but might just be the Luke Skywalker we need right now...

...It sure does seem as though Hamill is preparing to rock playing an older Jedi harder than our fluttering geeky hearts could have ever imagined.

Which, seeing as he's pretty much the cornerstone of the entire Star Wars saga, is definitely one of those very good things we hear so much about...

What do you reckon, though?
