Well, mankind is certainly divided on this issue! At the moment, the gaming industry is being put under the pressure of the voice actors it employs. Around September 24th, voice actors across the gaming community announced their desire to strike if better regulations for their profession weren't introduced. The response to this issue has been mixed - you have your haters, attacking them because they have jobs and money, and the obvious supporters who see the need for regulation.
Naturally, I'll be explaining why this is a vital issue for the art form we love and why all gamers should support the talent that have brought some of our favourite gaming characters to life! But it seems that the list of voice actors in support of, what has been labelled PerformanceMatters on Twitter, just keeps growing and growing!
Elias Toufexis, Voice Actor For Adam Jensen in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Joins the Strike!
As it stands, we're not entirely sure how this situation will progress. After having heard awful things about how certain actors were treated during the development of an Activision-published project, you'll see the need for regulations and for publishers to abide by them. Throughout this whole issue, we've been given truly great insights, from Wil Wheaton for example, into what it's actually like to record lines for a video game. Seriously, check out that article!
But it seems that everyone is weighing in on the issue, highlighting the negative effects so much strain on your voice can have. Additionally, there's the issue of royalties and pay, which is something a lot of us are sure to relate to!
So naturally, being a massive fan of Metal Gear Solid and Deus Ex, seeing Elias Toufeix and David Hayter come out against the issue, you can't help but support it. Video game actors have had it rough for years and as the industry has evolved into a multi-billion dollar enterprise, they need the recognition that we see film actors and actresses receive. After all, gaming has its celebrities, too!
I admit that when it comes to Video Games, voice actors is never anything I really paid attention to. I mean David Hayter was always an exception, but now we're all so familiar with the likes of Jennifer Hale, Nolan North, Laura Bailey, Troy Baker, and mountains more. Their impact on this art form deserves recognition and they deserve to work in more supportive and comfortable environments. Let us know where you stand on performance matters and the work of Elias Toufeix!
