Captain Marvel is one of the most eagerly anticipated films of Marvel's Phase 3, though we have many years to go until the film's release in 2018, probably because it's Marvel's first female lead solo film (since Elektra). Unfortunately, news is few and far between for the Captain Marvel film, and with plenty of other movies on their roster it's a bit crowded in the Marvel Cinematic Universe right now. But writers Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) are hard at work creating the best screenplay for Carol Danvers, and we've had some recent hints that we might not have to wait until 2018 to see her soar onto our screens!
We Might See Danvers Sooner Than 2018!
Constantly plagued by questions about Captain Marvel, Kevin Feige and the other movers and shakers in the MCU have slowly been giving us some insight into the movie's progression, even if that news is that we have no real news at all. Feige recently revealed that we should expect no casting revelations soon...
"I think right now we’re scripting the film, figuring out who we want Carol Danvers to be, and really what the structure of the movie will be and what her part will be in some of our other phase 3 films. And it would be next year that we start to really think about casting."
Well, I suppose more time means more fan cast lists, and they're always fun! But there's one part of this quote that is really interesting - Captain Marvel's role in Marvel's other films specifically, phase 3. What's interesting about that? I hear you cry. Of course she'll be in other movies! In phase 4 yes, Danvers' appearance is a dead cert, but there are only 2 movies following hers in phase 3, and it only makes sense for her to be in one of them...
Obviously, Captain Marvel will play a big role in [Avengers: Infinity War - Part II](tag:2390833), but The Inhumans? Maybe she'll have a cameo, but considering how little we know about that film it's not really of much note. So what about the other phase 3 films? Is Kevin Feige suggesting that Carol Danvers will appear before her solo film?
But Which Will It Be?
So let's check them off. [Captain America: Civil War](tag:994409) is very unlikely to feature a Danvers cameo, as she won't even be cast until later in 2016. Doctor Strange is similarly unlikely. [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2](tag:1081113) seems like a safe bet, as Carol's powers have Kree origins and she's something of an interstellar superhero, but unfortunately we've already have a definitive answer about that...
Drat. But then, unless the Guardians come crashing back down to Earth, it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense for Carol to be part of that story... right? Actually, scrap that, it could totally work. But it seems as though Marvel have gone in a different direction.
[Thor: Ragnarok](tag:956858) is very unlikely to feature Captain Marvel, but Black Panther is another story. T'Challa will have a role in Civil War, so his solo film won't be an origin story (unless it's a prequel). Maybe it will deal with how he joins the Avengers, and establish a friendship between T'Challa and Carol to foreshadow her own heroic entrance into the MCU (like how Luke Cage is being introduced in Jessica Jones, preceding his solo show).
Most likely, however, is that Captain Marvel will make her debut in the first half of Avengers: Infinity War, with her solo movie filling in some blanks and potentially setting her up to be team leader in Infinity War Part 2...
Ok, maybe all this is wishful thinking, but I guess I just can't wait to see Captain Marvel's entrance into the MCU, and I personally think it's likely we'll see her before her solo film in 2018. But what do you think? Let us know in the comments or write your own post!
