We've all heard the stories from the Suicide Squad set, right? We've heard that Jared Leto sent a love letter and a live rat to Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) and bullets with a dead hog to Will Smith (Deadshot).

That's just... lovely.
That's just... lovely.

But now Will Smith has come out and said something that makes me question:

Just How Far Gone is Jared Leto?

I'm not gonna hurt you...
I'm not gonna hurt you...

We all know the danger that the role of the Joker brings, and trying to top the iconic performance by Heath Ledger must surely take some sort of sacrifice. Jared Leto has certainly made a good attempt at doing just that, and we won't know just how good it is until August. But we can definitely see that it has taken some toll on him, which prompted co-star Will Smith to come out and say:

I've never actually met Jared Leto. We worked together for 6 months and we’ve never exchanged a word outside of ‘Action! and ‘Cut!’ I literally have not met him yet. So, the first time I see him will be ‘Hey, Jared. What’s up?’ He was all in on the Joker."

Too right Joker.
Too right Joker.

Wow. For Smith to actually come out and say that shows that Jared Leto must not have been truly out of character for the entire time on set. Maybe not even for the entire time they filmed, on or off set. I mean, Ledger locked himself up for about a month to get into character, but this is different. I'm kind of scared about what we may see on screen next year... I'm not entirely sure that there will be much of Jared Leto in there at all.

Of course this begs the question...

How deeply are actors affected by their roles?

Do you really?
Do you really?

It's an interesting question, one that not many of us think about as fans when we watch the celebrities streaming down the red carpets. It isn't a cushy job. Some actors (Christian Bale comes to mind) go through extreme body transformations for roles. Others, like Heath Ledger, pay a much dearer price. The fact of the matter is that some actors really get deeply inside their character, and surely they take away a piece of that character in themselves... permanently. Usually such a deep investment in the role turns into an incredible performance, but is it worth it if the actor will be permanently affected?
