"You know who to call when you have ghosts but who do you call when you have monsters?"
Monster Squad is a film that does everything right for monster fans. The PG-13 rated ghostbusters/goonies love child runs 82 minutes and will keep you hooked from the title card to credit roll. IMDB gives it a fair but in my opinion low 7.2/10.
As a huge monster fan myself, especially those owned and licensed by Universal (Frankenstein is my spirit animal) I was surprised I hadn't seen this film until it hit Netflix. With the 20th anniversary of this movie right around the corner and halloween incoming by the minute I thought now is the perfect time to tell you about it.
The plot can be boiled down to a simple but lovable story. A group of young monster fans starts a club about their passion and soon finds themselves defending the world from Dracula.
Although Monster Squad was considered a flop when it came out in 1987, it has slowly gained a following among monster fans and movie buffs alike. There is something this movie that'll rope you in and wonder why you never saw it as a kid, is it the incredible synth music? The amazing practical effects that bring these monsters to life? or even just the charm of a movie that's almost old enough to buy booze? I don't quite know, and as much as I would love to be able to tell you; You're going to have to check this one out for yourself.
Find a comfy spot, open Netflix, and enjoy this sleeper hit for the holiday!
Below I've left a video from one of my Youtube series where I review movies available on Netflix.
Until next time, I'll leave you with a bit of advice; If your being attacked by "Wolfman", kick him in the nards!
