Greetings & salutations NFL fans! The 2015 season is zooming through and we are back with the Week 5 edition of the 2015 Friends in Square Places Fan Duel BEAT DOWN!
As usual the FanDuel BEAT DOWN came down to the wire and once again with a big fat ZERO staring at us in the face (this time from Nate Washington) allowed "ilovehermione" to use the Time Turner and come out of no where to take the top spot. Congrats with eyes of hate!
Don't forget if you'd like to join us in our FanDuel just sign up today! Space is limited so don't delay!
After riding a 10 win week we fumbled on the goaline and came up short during Week 4 coming out 6-9 and bringing us to a putrid 29-33. Yeesh. Even though we've had a lot of close ones in the world of point spreads the only thing that matters is if you've got my money.
At least we can claim that we covered our beat down of the week and came very close to calling the score of the Jets game. Unfortunately the Raiders let us down but I guess I should have seen it coming.
So let's get down to business!
WEEK 5 : (Bye teams - PANTHERS, DOLPHINS, VIKINGS, JETS)
BEAT DOWN OF THE WEEK
New England Patriots (3-0) +9.5 at Dallas Cowboys (2-2)
Face reality, the Patriots are on a mission this year and that is to beat down every single team they encounter on their schedule. I was tempted to deter from this game because not only am I tired of picking the Pats but also there were other games that may have qualified for BEAT DOWN material. But I went with logic.
Look Brandon Weeden is playing great boasting a 108.8 passer rating, almost engineering a great comeback win against New Orleans. But he is still Brandon Weeden, And on the other side is still Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. I know it's a broken record but you're gonna have to just deal with it.
Cowboys haven't beaten New England since 1996 and have never won against Brady. Expect that trend to continue and expect Gronk to put up a show for Jerry Jones. Pats are 2-0-1 against the spread where the Boys are just 1-3, but in the past 10 games (seasons), Bill Belichick is 6-4 ATS ATS coming off a bye and since 2000 he is 11-4 straight up.
Cleveland Browns (1-3) at Baltimore Ravens (1-3) -6.5
I'm a firm believer that Cleveland is not going to go anywhere until they hand the reigns over to Johnny Manziel. The NFL is flooded with Josh McCowns. With a 17-35 career as a starting quarterback and a career of 21-55 it is evident that he not meant to be the driving force of a team. People will point to his 98,4% passer rating and his 78.05% passer rating against the Chargers; but all I have to do is mention McCown has lost nine consecutive starts.
Look sometimes it's not about the stats and it's about something beyond the numbers that cannot be properly explained. Like Tim Tebow, Manziel is able to tap into this pool of energy that allows him to seemingly make something out of nothing and elevate the play of others around him. Johnny can give you stats. He can also give you something that McCown can't which is a homing beacon for other players to gravitate around. The Browns need a star and McCown is not that guy.
The Ravens have owned the Browns in Baltimore and until Petite pulls the trigger the trend will continue. I feel for Browns fans in the sense that they are basically going through the same circus Rex Ryan put the Jets through and I'm constantly amazed week in and week out at how Petite falls deeper into the same traps.
St. Louis Rams (2-2) at Green Bay Packers (4-0) -9.5
This wasn't an easy pick to make. I really like the way that St. Louis is playing and Todd Gurley showed he is to getting more comfortable in the NFL every week. I've always liked Nick Foles who has one of the fastest playmakers in Tavon Austin. They also have a stout defense that I think they can keep them in the game.
But Green Bay has Aaron Rogers. And in today's NFL that's all you need apparently. Rogers still hasn't thrown a pick at home since Noah hammered his first nail and what I'm betting on is that St. Louis uses this new running game to keep Rogers on the bench enough to keep the game under 10. This one is a crap shoot according to Oddshark who has betting split right down the middle.
Most betters are taking the over but I think i'll take the under on this one. GB has the 8th best defense and St. Louis is 16th. There will be scoring but can see it being under. I'm taking Green Bay straight up but I'll take St. Louis against the spread.
*Packers are 4-0 against the spread...
