Fans of the insanely popular TV show The Walking Dead know that it's based on the just as popular comic book series of the same name. But those who don't read the comics might not know how different from the show they really are. While the plot and most of the characters are all basically the same, the show and the comic have long since paved their own paths and are no longer reliant on the other to tell a story.
This is why some things that happen in the comics may or may not make it into the show, and vice versa. One example is the tragic loss of Rick Grimes's hand in the comic book. Yes, in the comic series, Rick Grimes -- the tough, cool and maybe just a little insane leader of the TWD group -- loses his hand!
It happens pretty early on in the comic series, during the Governor storyline. In the TV show, Rick gets out without any permanent body damage — while the same can't really be said for most of his teammates. However, in the comics, Rick gets into a brutal fight with the Governor, resulting in the loss of his five-digit shooting machine!
Pretty gruesome, which is normal for things in The Walking Dead. But it's not all bad, Rick does get a pretty sweet hook-like replacement! Unfortunately, his friends do not start calling him 'Captain Grimebeard.'
Fans were expecting Rick to lose his hand in the TV show shortly after The Governor arrived, but it never happened. Which is great for Rick Grimes, who probably didn't want his hand chopped off and replaced with a metallic hook-like object. Except that that's totally what he wanted...
Andrew Lincoln Campaigned to Lose His Hand!
Andrew Lincoln, the man who brought Rick Grimes to life in The Walking Dead TV series, recently sat down with Comicbook.com to talk about the upcoming sixth season of the show. As you've probably guessed, Season 6 is going to be incredibly brutal, with Rick and the gang having to face up against zombies, other people, and maybe even themselves!
I don't think anyone expects everyone to come out untouched. Everyone hopes for it, but doesn't expect it. When asked about his character's two hands, and if that count will ever go down to just one, Lincoln had this to say:
"You know, I campaigned two seasons ago when the Governor was around... I was saying, 'You've gotta do the hand guys!' And Victor, who was in charge of special effects, just said, 'No, no no no. Anybody else but not you. It'll cost a fortune with green screen and blue screen.' But you know, I'm of the opinion that certainly with where the story seems to be going this season, no one is safe of any long term damage. It's an extraordinary season because it's very intense and insular for the first few and then we lift our eyes up and it feels like there's a whole new horizon out there and it feels like it's very thrilling but also it's very dangerous."
So it seem that even Rick Grimes himself was on team 'One-Hand Rick'! The reason why we didn't get a one-handed Rick actually makes a lot of sense: the effects it would take to make it look like Andrew Lincoln had only one hand are not cheap, and actually cutting off his hand is painful and probably kind of illegal! So they couldn't really go either route.
Still, it would have been AWESOME to see Rick lose his hand in the show! Maybe now that the series is breaking so many records and getting such stellar ratings, we'll see it happen in this or a later season.
But that's not the only thing from the comics that may make its way onto the show. There are a lot of story elements that we may see on-screen in the near future, like:
Rick's Beard: Level 100!
You're probably wondering who that strange old man is up there. Well, that strange old man is actually Rick Grimes, the protagonist of The Walking Dead! You see, the comics are actually a little farther ahead than the show, so some characters have noticeably aged.
Rick isn't exactly an old man here, but he's definitely gotten his wise old man beard. Fans of the show know how reluctant Rick is to shave, with him having only just done it last season. Well, it seems that Rick's clean shave won't be lasting for long. Andrew Lincoln confirmed that Rick's manly, rugged beard would be returning in Season 6!
Technically, he stated that the beard would be less unruly, and more like how it was in the earlier seasons. But that just means it's only a matter of time before the beard grows, and keeps growing until we (hopefully) get wise old Dumblerick in the show!
Carl Loses an Eye!
Following in the footsteps of his father, Carl Grimes too loses a body part. But instead of his hand, he loses an eye! The gruesome ordeal takes place during an attack on Rick and company.
After a group of Walkers attack Rick and his group, Douglas Monroe, a member of the group, starts firing his gun frantically. One of the bullets finds its way to Carl and shoots him right in the eye. Luckily, he survives this, but is left with a permanent mark.
Carl might not get his eye taken away in the TV show for the same reason Rick still has his hand: budget. Carl is a main character after all, with a lot of screen time. It would cost quite a lot to CGI or green screen a big permanent hole in the side of actor Chandler Riggs's face. But like I said, with the show getting more and more popular with each season, they might be able to pull it off in the near future.
It's also worth mentioning that Douglas Monroe is technically in the show. But in the TV show, he's a woman named Deanna. So you know, the cards are all on the table.
Also, Carl isn't given any pirate-related nicknames in the comics, just like his father. He isn't even given an eye-patch! All I'm saying is, Robert Kirkman, you're missing a lot of golden opportunities here.
Glenn is a really popular character in the TV series, which is why it's so shocking when you find out that he's been dead in the comics for quite some time. Glenn met his untimely demise at the hands of TWD big baddie Negan and his trusty baseball bat, Lucille.
Ever since this happened, fans of both the comic and the TV show have been praying it doesn't make it to the big screen! While there's been no confirmation of Glenn's death in the show, rumor has it that Negan will be making an appearance soon -- which definitely spells trouble for Glenn, Rick and the rest of the gang!
Glenn's death is just as likely as any character in the series, due to Robert Kirkman not caring at all about fan favorites (bring back Noah and Beth, damn you!). I know a lot of people say the catch slogan "If Daryl Dies, We Riot," but my slogan is "If Glenn Dies, I Riot"! And if Daryl dies, I put on my Mockingjay outfit and lead an army of rebels to storm the AMC headquarters.
The Walking Dead comes back THIS Sunday, and I can't properly express how excited I am! Make sure to tune in to see Rick and the gang face the deadly trials of the zombie apocalypse! And as always:
