Marvel Studios announced that it will be making a sequel to this year’s Ant-Man, to be released in 2018, and the name is rather interesting: Ant-Man and The Wasp. This will mark the first time that a female superhero’s name has made it into the title of a Marvel film.
Wasp, or Hope Van Dye, is an important character in the Marvel universe, as she is the daughter of the first Ant-Man, Dr. Hank Pym, owner of Pym Technologies. In the comics, she reunites with her father, along with the new and current Ant-Man, Scott Lang, to stop Pym CEO Darren Cross from making and selling the Yellowjacket suit, a weapon based on Pym’s Ant-Man suit.
In the film, Hope/Wasp wears the same, but updated, suit her mother wore before she (supposedly) died, so it’s implied that she’ll be following in her mother’s footsteps. Evangeline Lily will be playing Wasp, with Paul Rudd returning as Ant-Man of course, and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym.
The film is set to be released on July 6, 2018 and will be directed by Peyton Reed. I’m sure it’ll do well in the box office, as the first one made $178.5 million in the U.S. alone and $409.8 million worldwide. And it’s not even finished being released, as it’s still set to open in China on October 16.
Until the next Ant-Man film, we’ll get to see Paul Rudd again in the third Captain America film next year: Captain America: Civil War, which will be the beginning of Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It will be released on May 6, 2016. Marvel also announced Doctor Strange will go into theaters on November 4, 2016, but not much information has been given about it yet.
In 2017, we’ll get to see the much-anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy 2 on May 5, the new untitled Spider-Man film on July 28, and Thor: Ragnarok on November 3. I’m not sure if I’m more excited for Guardians or Thor. Guardians was awesome and hilarious and Thor…well, he’s Thor.
Anyway, continuing into 2018, Blank Panther will arrive on February 16, the earliest in the year a Marvel film will have ever been released. It was originally set to come out on July 6 of that year, but was pushed up with the addition of the Ant-Man sequel, which took that slot. The next Marvel film is Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1, which will be released on May 4, 2018.
Continuing in 2019, Phase 3 includes Captain Marvel, the next solo female superhero film, set for a March 8, 2019 release instead of the original date of November 6, 2018. Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2 will come out on May 3, 2019. There’s also a Marvel film called Inhumans, which I’ve never heard of before, but it’s set for July 12. There’s no information yet about who will join the cast. Some people speculate that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are Inhumans, but it hasn’t been confirmed if that’s true or not. If so, then I guess we’ll see them in the film. However, they have been introduced in the second season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
On top of all that, there are 3 additional Marvel films set to be released on May 1, July 10, and November 6 of 2020, but they haven’t been named as of yet. Those three films will mark the end of Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
