Happy 14th Birthday, Smallville!
On the 16th of October, 2001, the WB network aired the pilot of Smallville, an hour-long show chronicling the life of Clark Kent before he becomes the hero we all know him to be.
(In case you don't know, it's Superman, he becomes Superman!)
The show ran for 10 seasons until it ended in 2011 with a whopping 216 episodes (218 if you include two double episodes) under its belt and a roster of stars that made the show what it is.
TOM WELLING (Clark Kent)
Being the lead star, it goes without saying that Tom Welling starred in all 200+ episodes, but outside of Smallville, his acting credits are very slim.
Getting his first big gig on Judging Amy, Welling went on to star in Cheaper by the Dozen 1 & 2 and The Fog, while on hiatus from filming the show. After two years away from the screen, he returned in Parkland opposite Zac Efron, Billy Bob Thornton and Marcia Gay Harden and Draft Day with Kevin Costner and Jennifer Garner.
Welling only has one upcoming role and that is in the newest film adaption of a Nicholas Sparks novel, The Choice, which will be released in February 2016.
KRISTIN KREUK (Lana Lang)
Playing Lana Lang (Clark Kent's first love) for seven seasons, and guest starring in multiple episodes afterwards, Kristin Kreuk spent seven years on the show before leaving, but not before working on multiple projects during her time on Smallville; Snow White: The Fairest of Them All, EuroTrip, Earthsea and Edgemont.
After leaving the show, Kreuk went on to star in Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, multiple episodes of Chuck, the TV mini-series Ben Hur and Ecstasy.
Kreuk's latest role has been as Catherine Chandler in The CW's Beauty and the Beast.
MICHAEL ROSENBAUM (Lex Luthor)
As well as seeing the early years of Clark Kent, we also saw also saw the beginning of Lex Luthor and the man he would become. For seven seasons Michael Rosenbaum played Superman's future nemesis and only came back for one episode.
Getting his start in acting in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Urban Legend and Zoe, Duncan, Jack & Jane, Rosenbaum went on to star in Sweet November, Sorority Boys, Poolhall Junkies, Bringing Down the House, Racing Stripes and Cursed, while playing Lex Luther.
After leaving the show in 2008, Rosenbaum starred in projects such as Catch .44, Hit and Run, one season of Breaking In, and aside from acting in front of the camera, he's done tons of work in the DC Animated Universe: Batman Beyond, The Zeta Project, Static Shock, Teen Titans, Justice League, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Justice League: Doom and Justice League: Throne of Atlantis.
Michael Rosenbaum currently stars in TVLand's Impastor, about a guy who steals a man's identity and ends up posing as a small town's new gay pastor.
ALLISON MACK (Chloe Sullivan)
Starting her career back in 1989 in Police Academy 6: City Under Siege, Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves, Opposite Sex, and countless other credits, was was cast as Chloe Sullivan in all 10 seasons of Smallville.
Aside from her role on the show, Mack also directed two episodes and stared in Smallville: Chloe Chronicles and Smallville: Vengeance Chronicles.
During her run on Smallville and after, Mack starred in the likes of The Ant Bully, The Batman, Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, Riese, Wilfred and most recently appeared in an episodes of The Following, American Odyssey and Lost in Oz.
SAM JONES III (Pete Ross)
Aside from playing Clark's best friend, Pete Ross (for three seasons and returning for one episode in Season 7), Sam Jones III has appeared in numerous TV shows including NYPD Blue, Saved by the Bell: The New Class, Judging Amy, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, The Practice, 7th Heaven, Bones, Army Wives, ER and The Defenders.
But his biggest role has been playing Craig Shilo in Blue Mountain State and will next be seen in the movie Blue Mountain State: The Rise of Thadland.
ERIC JOHNSON (Whitney Fordman)
Only appearing on Smallville for one season and guest starring in two episodes afterwards (with the last being in Season 4), Eric Johnson started his acting career with Legends of the Fall, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: The TV Show, Texas Rangers, Bang Bang You're Dead, Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed, The Dead Zone, Everest, the new Flash Gordon TV series and guest starred in shows like Supernatural, Alcatraz, Orphan Black, Criminal Minds, Rookie Blue, and Saving Hope.
Johnson was most recently seen alongside Clive Owen in the TV series, The Knick.
JOHN SCHNEIDER (Jonathan Kent)
Best known for playing Bo Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard, John Schneider played Jonathan Kent for the first five seasons and appeared in three more episodes before the show ended.
Schneider has countless movie and TV credits to his name including Kung Fu: The Legend Continues, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, Diagnosis Murder, Veronica's Closet, Relic Hunter, Touched by an Angel, The Mummy: The Animated Series, 10.5, Lake Placid 2, Sydney White, Nip/Tuck, Dirty Sexy Money, The Rebound, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, 90210, Desperate Housewives, Hot in Cleveland, Glee and Mistresses.
Look out for John Schneider in Exit 14, Like Son, Hate Crime and Candles later this year and into 2016.
ANNETTE O'TOOLE (Martha Kent)
Annette O'Toole played Martha Kent on Smallville for six seasons before her character went off to Washington and returned for four episodes before the series ended.
Much like her Smallville on-screen husband, O'Toole has over 80 acting credits to her name like The Virginian, Mod Squad, The Partridge Family, 48 Hrs., Superman III, It, The Outer Limits, Nash Bridges, The Huntress, The Finder, Grey's Anatomy, Battle Creek and Halt and Catch Fire.
Annette O'Toole can be seen in We Go On this year and Women Who Kill in 2016.
JOHN GLOVER (Lionel Luthor)
He played Lionel Luthor as a guest star in Season 1 before becoming a regular from Season 2 right up to the end of Season 7, then guest starred again four more times before the show ended.
With over 100 acting credits to his name, Glover has appeared in such things as Annie Hall, The Incredible Shrinking Woman, Murder, She Wrote, Scrooged, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, RoboCop 2, South Beach, Dinosaurs, Batman: The Animated Series, Numb3rs, Heroes, TRON: Uprising, The Blacklist, Agent Carter and The Good Wife.
John Glover can be seen next in You Bury Your Own and We Go On, alongside Smallville co-stars Cassidy Freeman and Annette O'Toole.
ERICA DURANCE (Lois Lane)
Making her debut as Lois Lane in Season 4, Erica Durance continued playing the role all the way until the show ended in Season 10.
Durance first appearance on the The X-Files spin-off, The Lone Gunmen, before going on to star in House of the Dead, Tru Calling, Andromeda, Stargate SG-1, The Butterfly Effect 2, Charlie's Angels and Harry's Law.
Erica Durance can currently be seen playing Dr. Alex Reid in Saving Hope and in Painkillers.
JENSEN ACKLES (Jason Teague)
Only appearing in Season 4, Ackles played Jason Teague, a new love interest for Lana Lang.
Getting his big break in Days of Our Lives, Ackles went on to appear in Dark Angel, Dawson's Creek, Still Life, Ten Inch Hero, My Bloody Valentine and Batman: Under the Red Hood.
Jensen Ackles is best known for his role as Dean Winchester in Supernatural, which just entered its 11th season.
AARON ASHMORE (Jimmy Olsen)
First appearing in Season 6, Aaron Ashmore played Jimmy Olsen until the Season 8 finale and then returned for the series finale.
Ashmore has appeared in Due South, Animorphs, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, La Femme Nikita, The Skulls 2, The West Wing, 1-800-Missing, Veronica Mars, Lost Girl, In Plain Sight and as Steve Jinks in Warehouse 13.
Most recently, Aaron Ashmore appeared in the first season of Killjoys and can be seen next in Regression with Emma Watson and Ethan Hawke and in Swept Under.
JUSTIN HARTLEY (Oliver Queen/Green Arrow)
Oliver Queen first appeared on Smallville starting from Season 6 and stayed until the very end of the series.
Justin Hartley got his big break on the daytime drama, Passions, before starring in the Aquaman pilot from the same people behind Smallville. After that didn't get picked up, he went on to star in Cold Case, Chuck, Castle, Hart of Dixie, Emily Owens M.D. and Revenge.
Just recently, Hartley was seen in Mistresses, The Young and the Restless and Another Time.
LAURA VANDERVOORT (Kara/Supergirl)
While the character of Kara first made an appearance in Season 3, Laura Vandervoort made her debut as Kara in Season 7 and, leaving after one season, appeared three more times before the finale.
Making her debut in an episode of Goosebumps, Vandervoort also starred in Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Mutant X, The Dresden Files, The Lookout, Into the Blue 2: The Reef, Riverworld, V, Family Guy, This Means War, Ted, White Collar and Haven.
Laura Vandervoort can be seen in the supernatural drama, Bitten.
SAM WITWER (Davis Bloome/Doomsday)
Only appearing in Season 8, Witwer played Davis Bloome, a paramedic who also happened to be Superman's ultimate foe, Doomsday!
First appearing in an episode of ER, Witwer went on to star in Dark Angel, Angel, Star Trek: Enterprise, JAG, Cold Case, NCIS, Battlestar Galactica, Bones, Dexter, The Mist, Pathology, Grimm, Being Human (US) and Stalker.
Aside from all his on-screen credits, Witwer also has done a lot of voice over work on both games and TV including Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 1 & 2, Soulcalibur IV, Kinect Star Wars, Lego Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Out, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, Star Wars Rebels and Disney Infinity 3.0.
Sam Witwer can be seen next year in Officer Downe.
CASSIDY FREEMAN (Tess Mercer)
Making her first appearance in the first episode of Season 8 and continuing to the end, Cassidy Freeman played Tess Mercer, new CEO of LuthorCorp.
Starring in some of the biggest TV shows like Cold Case, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: NY, The Playboy Club, CSI: Miami, The Vampire Diaries and Once Upon a Time, Cassidy Freeman can be seen in Longmire, Cortez and We Go On with fellow Smallville stars, Annette O'Toole and John Glover.
CALLUM BLUE (Zod)
Callum Blue joined the cast of Smallville in Season 9 and one episode of Season 10 as Zod.
With his first TV role on the British cop drama The Bill, Blue went on to star in Casualty, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Grey's Anatomy, Related, The Tudors, Secret Diary of a Call Girl, A Christmas Carol, The Sarah Jane Adventures, Sanctuary, Colombiana, Royal Pains and of my personal favorites, Dead Like Me and the movie, Dead Like Me: Life After Death.
Callum Blue can be seen next in The Red Dress and The Charnel House.
THE GUEST STARS
Aside from the multitude of regular stars, the show also has a very long list of guest stars who helped make the show what it is, including quite a few from the Superman Universe.

So there you have it! 14 years after the pilot aired, some of the cast have gone quiet and some have continued to stick around in the acting world. Even though I'm not a huge Superman fan, it still remains one of my favorite TV shows.
