Frozen is one of Disney's most lucrative property to date, with the huge success of the film leading to tons of marketing opportunities and, naturally, the sequel. Not known for giving their princess movies a part 2, Disney are breaking from tradition with Frozen 2, and the high expectations may be difficult to satisfy. The filmmakers have a very tricky task ahead of them, especially considering much of Frozen's popularity was sparked by that song: how can they possibly come up with a tune to rival Let It Go?
We have a very very long time to wait until Frozen 2, but that hasn't stopped the hype from fueling the rumour mill. When browsing for news about the highly anticipated Frozen sequel, it's difficult to separate speculation from fact. So here's a handy guide to what we already know WILL feature in the film, and which rumours for Frozen 2 are completely unfounded!
All We Know
Thanks to the film being so far off, the creative team is keeping pretty quiet about the film's developments, but there are a few things we know for sure.
As far as the production goes, here's the main points of where the film stands...
- The writing process has officially begun.
- The whole story ISN'T planned out yet.
- But the ending is - according to Chris Buck it's "terrific".
- Young Elsa will feature heavily in the plot.
We've also had some intriguing hints about Elsa's character development. In the first movie, Elsa was isolated and fearful. Even her most iconic moments (Let It Go) were fueled by denial and the desire to escape her repressive former life. While Anna's story was all about adventure and discovering her capabilities, Elsa's tale was more sombre, as she struggled with her demons. That's all going to change in Frozen 2 though: Chris Buck has teased that we'll see a different side to the newly crowned queen in the sequel.
"In Frozen she had such a dramatic journey, and at the end she's just starting to feel like she can open up and have some fun again. That's what was really good about Frozen Fever -- we could have fun with Elsa. And that personality... you will see in the next one."
This is very promising: the worst thing would be to see Elsa go back on her progress and retreat into herself again. Frozen 2 should definitely show some character development from Elsa, as well as revealing more of her personality. Personally, I'm hoping for a lot more focus on Anna and Elsa as siblings too - sisters often banter and bicker, and this would be a fun dynamic to explore!
Luckily, the writers seem to be thinking the same thing!
Chris Buck and screenwriter Jennifer Lee have confirmed that the sisters will be working together more in Frozen 2, and have stated their awareness of how having two female protagonists is important to the success of the story. Not only that, but the creative team are also dedicated to sending good messages with the sequel, as well as delivering some social commentary for people who feel ostracised and outcast.
"We will tackle other issues that, I think, are out there today that boys and girls, men and women, are dealing with. I think we’re very aware of what is happening in society."
This is super exciting, and has fed the fire of rumours about Elsa's romance...
All We Don't Know
So there are a bunch of rumours masquerading as plot spoilers, and I'm gonna set the record straight. First up, though I would love it to be true, the idea of Elsa getting a female love interest in Frozen 2 is just speculation.
This seems to be sparked mostly by the reaction to Let It Go as an anthem for anyone who feels isolated, with the subtext of coming out of the closet. I'm not gonna lie, this is exactly what I thought of when I saw the film, but alas, Disney would be taking a huge risk with including LGBT characters in one of their biggest films. But hey, maybe the House of Mouse will surprise us. As for any other romance options for Elsa that's also just speculation.
Another big plot rumour is that Frozen 2's story will mirror the plot of the Frank L Baum novel Ozma Of Oz. Again, this is just a rumour (prompted apparently by Chris Buck visiting Australia. Uh...). Any reveal of Anna's magical powers is also false, though the creative team did teasingly confirm they thought of her power as love.
Chris Buck's comments about Disney stories interlinking sparked another wave of speculation about a crossover film. But this is pretty unlikely considering the risk factor (and the fact that logically it doesn't totally pan out). Finally, another big rumour is that to rise to the challenge set by Let It Go, Frozen 2 will feature another show-stopping song, and this time it'll be a duet between Anna and Elsa! Though this is speculation, I think it's probably the most likely rumour of the bunch to actually happen in the film.
There's plenty of things we'd like to see from Frozen 2: top of my list is definitely an expansion of the mythology, an explanation of Elsa's powers, and some more super-powered princesses. So while we really do know very little right now, the speculation is super fun! What would you like to see in the sequel?
