While Charlie and the Chocolate Factory may not have been amazing, it certainly had its moments. One of the best parts of the movie was Johnny Depp's portrayal of the highly eccentric chocolate maker, Willy Wonka.
Looking at it carefully, Wonka appears to have a lot of similarities with none other than... the Doctor!
Yeah I know, sounds crazy, right? That was my reaction as well. However, this theory by (you guessed it) Reddit user LemoLuke supports the claim quite well. His theory is chalked out from the movies as well as the famous books (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator) by Roald Dahl.
First of all, both Willy Wonka and The Doctor are quite similar in personality.
- Both are quite eccentric, but geniuses
- Are extremely curious, excitable, and knowledgable
- Have a hidden "dark side"
- Love exploration, danger and adventure
- Extremely good leaders, motivators, and inspiring people
- Able to remain calm, even in the most dire situations
- Others think of them as crazy
And come on, there is certainly a Doctor-like feeling about his character.
It is already evident that they have a lot of things in common. However, there is more to it. In the books, we learn that Willy Wonka is actually very, very, very old, just like the Doctor. He also posses a machine called the "Great Glass Elevator", which basically appears normal from the outside, and yet, is somehow able to fit Charlie's whole family, including their bed, furniture, etc. Remind you of something?
Not only that, it possesses various qualities associated with the TARDIS.
- Can travel through space and time
- Extremely tough and nearly indestructible
- Able to generate gravity, oxygen, and life support systems
- Bigger on the inside
- Lots of buttons and levers
Furthermore, there is more evidence to support this theory in the books.
In the second instalment, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, we come to know that Wonka travels into space and battles a horde of aliens, preventing an invasion on Earth. Due to the fact that the had immense knowledge of these aliens (the Vermicious Knids, as they were known), it is possible that he had fought them, or at least encountered them before.
Okay, now I am just going to go and think about how awesome this sounds.
