Suicide Squad is one of the most hotly anticipated movies of 2016, and Joker star Jared Leto is only feeding the hype with his madcap method acting. Jared Leto's turn as the Joker has been contentious from the moment he was cast, but then anyone following Heath Ledger's portrayal would be bound to face backlash.

To his credit, by throwing himself into the role Leto is definitely displaying his dedication, though that still hasn't stopped some fans from criticising everything from his interpretation (still mostly unseen) to his tattoos. For the Clown Prince of Crime, no news is bad news, but Leto's latest antics might have taken the 30 Seconds To Mars frontman too far into the role...

Acting Like A Criminal?

During a recent concert, Jared Leto did a Q&A with his fans which for the most part was kind of adorable (in a surreal way).

The Suicide Squad hype kicked off though, with his response to a fan wearing a Batman shirt.

"You’re really brave...I can’t wait for you to see this – they’re going to lock me away in a box after this movie comes out."

Jared Leto also let out the Joker's recognisably deranged laugh, just in case you'd forgotten which character he's playing. Leto's antics as the Joker have spread like wildfire through the internet, as he seems determined to prove just how nuts he can be. Thankfully, he was performing as Jared Leto, not as the Joker, at the Dubai Music Week, so at least we know he hasn't disappeared completely into the two-dimensional cartoon character.

Honestly, I cannot decide whether Leto's turn as the Joker is excellent casting or whether he's overselling the role. I mean, the "lock me away in a box" comment was clearly a joke but I'm hoping he realises he doesn't actually have to commit crimes in order to prove his worth. Still, his behaviour really is a fantastic hype machine for Suicide Squad, as he provides promotion for the film with every chance he gets.

True Dedication

It can't be said that Jared Leto doesn't know his source material, and it seems he's really been doing his research for the Joker. Fans were buzzing after Leto's homage to the one-off comic The Killing Joke on Instagram...

Fan speculation is flying about which comics the upcoming DC films will draw from, and considering Joker is referenced in [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice](tag:711870), Leto's hint can inform speculation for this movie too. Needless to say, this picture alone sparked tons of new theories. Of course, it could just be Jared Let's way of assuring fans he will do the Clown Prince justice, and he definitely found a stylish way to do this. His other Joker-style antics though, are distinctly less than subtle.

Probably thanks to filming schedules, Leto hasn't been hanging out with the Squad much, so he felt the need to bestow in-character gifts upon is co-stars to ensure they know he's thinking of them. Suicide Squad star Adam Beach was the one to let the press know about Leto's little presents...

"He sent Margot Robbie a nice love letter with a black box with a rat in it—a live rat. It was beautiful. Then he sent bullets to Will Smith with a letter."

Margot Robbie certainly seems to have had an interesting experience with Leto. The actress recently revealed that she's never actually seen Jared Leto out of his Joker makeup, and found the actor intimidating when she finally saw him out of character.

"What he’s doing with the character is so cool. At first it was kind of confronting (to be up close) but now I’m so used to it, I think if I ever saw him out of makeup now I would be really confused. Actually, I saw him out of makeup once and I was actually petrified of him. I was too scared to go up and didn’t know who that person was, and when he got back into his makeup I was far more comfortable."

Leto certainly seems to have been successful in throwing himself into the character, to the point where his closest co-star can't recognise him as himself! This is all very confidence inspiring, but Leto's final gift does have me a tad concerned that he's going too far... Adam Beach revealed Leto sent the cast a dead pig! Complete with a video of Leto as, you guessed it, the Joker.

"Basically, what he said was, 'Guys, I can't be there but I want you to know I'm doing my work as hard as you guys. The video he showed is in character. It blew our minds away."

Is this just the tip of the method acting iceberg? Here's hoping sending animal corpses is as far as Leto will go in his portrayal... But he's certainly proved beyond the shadow of a doubt that he is indeed the right actor for the role!
