Halloween is right around the corner, and whether you're a cosplayer scrambling to throw together an outfit (despite the fact that you have 10 right in your closet) or someone who just likes to have fun on the candy-fueled holiday, it's hard to ignore the fact that Harley Quinn is about to be a major player on the night that the spirits come out to play.

In fact, right now, the character is one of the top most searched when it comes to 2015 Halloween costumes -- and why not? The Clown Prince of Crime's right-hand woman is about to make her big screen debut in Warner Bros.' 2016 Suicide Squad, portrayed by actress Margot Robbie. If she's not hot this year, she's going to be by next Halloween -- so here are some tips to stay ahead of the spooky trend.

1. The Top

The upside to Harley's top is the fact that it requires a messy paint job. Grab some red fabric paint and a Daddy's Lil Monster white top from Etsy to avoid the process of stenciling out the text. Place a piece of cardboard inside of your shirt and sleeves while you paint so that none of the paint runs through. You can also use another piece of cardboard (or thick layers of newspaper) to help define where your lines need to be on the upper part of the top, and the sleeves.

2. The Hair

Tie your pigtails high and get ready to color! While some folks might prefer dip-dye, I find that using hair chalk helps me wash out colors from especially thick hair, and lasts without flaking all over my shoulders. Head to your local drug store and grab something along the lines of Splat Hair Chalk in Dusty Rose and Silver Moon. Application is easy, and it should last you long enough to wreak havoc on the night.

3. The Shorts

Metallic Spandex Booty Shorts can be a little hard to come by when you don't live in a big city. If a gaudy party clothing store isn't within walking distance, you can check out Amazon and eBay for cheap, quick alternatives -- or repaint a pair of boyshorts underwear with fabric paint. Remember -- you must use fabric-specific paint for this idea!

4. The Choker

Harley's PUDDIN' choker is readily available for purchase from sellers on eBay, but if that's a little pricey for you, here's an idea: grab an old white belt and cut it to scale. Then, place velcro on the belt to keep it secured around your neck (I'd recommend hot glueing the velcro to the belt rather than using an adhesive-back velcro). You can either paint the letters on to your choker, or grab a sheet of craft foam, cut them out, and hot glue them on (using small amounts of hot glue on each outer edge).

For the metallic effect, paint your craft foam letters in a metallic gold, and let them dry before glueing them on!

5. Replace Your Holsters With a Small Backpack

Heading out for Halloween means you're probably going to have to carry a few things with you, especially if you're covered in makeup as Harley Quinn. Instead of carrying around potentially questionable holsters, use the opportunity to carry a small back-pack instead. If you want to get creative and look a little more accurate, hot glue halves of metallic grommets (available at most department stores) on your straps to give them that "holster strap" effect.

6. Tattoos and Makeup

Most of Harley's tattoos are black and red -- making for a pretty easy stop by the Halloween costume shop for one of the crayon-based makeup palettes. Most simple clown or vampire makeup kits will do in this case, but if you want to go the extra mile, top your tattoos off with translucent powder so that they'll stay for the night.

For your other makeup, you'll need shades of rose red and aqua blue, as well as grays, browns, and darker black colors for her bruises. Make this easy by grabbing ELF's Little Black Beauty Book of eyeshadow colors from your local drug store. Top it off with a bright red lipstick and gloss, and you're ready to go!

Outside of all this, you'll need a pair of white heeled boots, and assorted studded jewelry that you can find at various accessory stores. There haven't really been many detailed looks at Robbie's full costume yet, so let your creativity fly when it comes to the various bracelets and cuffs that Harley wears.

Now that you're ready to go, all that's left to do is figure out where Batsy is and wreak havoc on his night!
