Victoria Justice has opened up about living with an autoimmune disorder named Hashimoto’s Disease in a bid to show fans that just because someone looks healthy, it doesn't mean they aren't suffering from painful and life-altering health problems.
The former Eye Candy actor has spoken out to Health magazine about how having a hidden illness has affected not only her health but her confidence over the years. Justice explained how to autoimmune thyroid condition which affects metabolism has meant she's been forced to live on an "extremely limited" diet excluding meat, dairy, wheat and sugar for long stints of her life and caused weight fluctuations. Justice explained:
"They had put me on this thyroid medication, and I think the levels were too high for me because it caused my skin to break out. All my life I’ve always had great skin, so it was really devastating. Also, at first, I was losing a lot of weight, then I went on tour and I started gaining weight, and it was the most I’d ever gained in my life."
Along with the physical effects she suffered from the disease, Justice admitted it also threatened to damage her self-esteem.
“It definitely did affect my confidence, and it made me a little bit more self-conscious, but at the end of the day, I had the support of my family and friends. I knew that the people around me had my back. Now I really empathize with people who have issues with their skin, because it can get you down.”
Although 22-year-old Justice is still living with the illness, she says
“Things have leveled out."
Let's hope it stays that way for many years to come!
