There you are, sitting in a movie theater, eating Junior Mints and enjoying a good movie when bam! - your favorite character tragically dies. I've gathered eight such heart-wrenching moments to brighten your day. Deep breaths now.
Might contain...okay, this whole post is a spoiler.
Quicksilver, Avengers: Age of Ultron
Quicksilver saves Hawkeye and a little boy from a barrage of gunfire, only to take the bullets himself. Though he spends most of the movie making life harder for the Avengers, in the end he proves himself to be a true superhero.
Satine, Moulin Rouge
It seems that Satine and Christian have it all - they overcome the evil Duke, save the Moulin Rouge and are completely in love. Then, at the height of their triumph, Satine succumbs to the consumption that has been slowly taking hold of her, dying in Christian's arms even as the curtain falls on their last duet together. Sniff.
Snape, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
Though Snape is viewed as an evil character, especially after he murders Dumbledore in cold blood, we eventually discover that everything he did stemmed from a love for Lily, Harry's mother. Before we and Harry have a chance to process this, Voldemort unleashes Nagini on the Potions master and he soon dies in Harry's arms, his last words telling all: "You have your mother's eyes."
Jay Gatsby, The Great Gatsby
The death of this lovelorn society king is doubly painful because it could've been totally avoided. When Wilson, a mechanic widowed by a hit and run, hears that the car that killed his wife belongs to Gatsby, he assumes that Gatsby is the killer and shoots him in his own backyard before turning the gun on himself. Gatsby's lover and the real killer, Daisy, doesn't even come to his funeral.
Qui-Gon Jinn, Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace
After an intense duel with the mysterious Darth Maul, Qui-Gon is mortally wounded in front of his helpless padawan. Obi-Wan quickly avenges his dying master, sending Darth Maul into the chasm in two pieces. Qui-Gon charges Obi-Wan with training Anakin, then dies in his arms.
Trinity, The Matrix Revolutions
Trinity is killed when the hovercraft carrying her and Neo crashes near Machine City. She dies poignantly in Neo's arms, who then sacrifices his own life to make peace with the Machines. Almost like Romeo and Juliet, but with sadistic AI programs.
Mags, Catching Fire
When the poisonous fog creeps in and Finnick is unable to carry both Mags and the wounded Peeta, Mags embraces the fog willingly, sacrificing her life so that the others can get to safety. She never speaks, yet her actions tell us more than words ever could.
Chuck, The Maze Runner
Sweet little Chuck dies after taking a bullet from a poison-crazed Gally. He does this to protect Thomas, who had become his first friend in the Glade. Just before he dies, he gives Thomas a small carving he had made, asking him to give it to his mother and tell her that he loved her. *SOB*
Boromir, The Fellowship of the Ring
When the Fellowship are ambushed by Uruk'hai in the woods near Lorien, Boromir bravely fends them off, giving Frodo - and the Ring - enough time to get away. Even after being shot multiple times, Boromir continues to fight, killing many Orcs before finally succumbing to his wounds. Even though he tries to take the Ring from Frodo, Boromir dies with honor and dignity.
Each of these characters died in different ways and circumstances, but they are all deserving of recognition and respect from us, their humble fans. Now if you'll excuse me, I need a tissue.
