With the recent release of the prequel to the family classic 'Peter Pan', the new Hugh Jackman film 'Pan' has taken many chances with their film and this seems to be the biggest one yet. Some even say it is even dumber than the disastrous Spider-man 3 dancing scene!

Pan features an obscene introductory scene of Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman) and many other pirates singing the lyrics of the rock classic, Smells like Teen Spirit by Nirvana.

Having this song play wasn't always the plan, as the film was originally meant to have the pirates singing good ol' pirate shanties - but according to Hugh Jackman,

“It was the most fun week I’ve ever had in my life, and we would sing songs every morning. That’s what pirates do, right? So we had sea shanties and classic kinds of pirate songs, and we’d sing ‘em, and [director] Joe [Wright] would be like, ‘Ugh, this is really wet. You know, you guys don’t seem like great pirates.’"

So clearly the pirate classics were swapped out for something a little more... Rock 'N' Roll?

The Nirvana classic wasn't the only song to be used, The Ramones' 'Blitzkreig Bop' was also used re-imagined for the movie.

I am a Nirvana fan myself and I have to say, the Pan version is starting to grow on me a little bit! Truly bonkers, but definitely great to see something so creative and unexpected!

This was a very brave decision to be made by Director Joe Wright even if it worked better and was more, it starts creating questions like how did they have Nirvana music in the 1940's, or The Ramones music too? Pan has in fact flopped at the box office, making only a small sum of $45 million in one week on a overall budget of $150 million! (Don't forget this doesn't include the marketing or the money for theatre chains!).

Maybe it was decisions like this one that caused such a box office bomb.
