Despite any rumors or signs of doubt, it seems as though Neill Blomkamp is moving full steam ahead with the fifth installment of his iconic Alien franchise. It's hard to forget Ripley's training and expertise with the weapon, a strangely integral part of her character development in the original film. Pulse rifles have been a common staple ever since for the series, and the next film in development -- tentatively known as Alien 5 -- seems to be no exception.
Yesterday, Blomkamp shared a photo of the upgraded rifle on his Instagram, highlighting a key installment:
The caption reads:
We all knew there would be pulse rifles. Obviously. Now with added RIS
Is the new Rail Interface System an upgrade for the sake of upgrading, or is it a telling sign of the villains that Blomkamp has cooking up in his brain? The RIS allows for a variety of attachments to its metal incisions, so the sky's the limit on what, exactly, we'll see with the finish product.
While there's no release date for the film yet, it is expected to begin filming in 2017.
