“Who is Luke Skywalker?” That question was posed to J.J. Abrams by the president of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy. Those four words spoken by Kennedy were enough to convince Abrams to pick up the torch and continue the legacy of Star Wars.

[Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens](tag:711158) will be taking place nearly thirty years after the destruction of the second Death Star over the forest moon of Endor. The Republic has overcome all odds and were successful in their mission. However not all is well in the years since as we have already viewed from the two previous teaser trailers for the upcoming film. There will be a split with good vs evil once again playing a major role in this universe. Instead of the Galactic Empire vs The Republic, it will now be known as the First Order vs The Resistance. This fight will move forward in this newer trilogy and J.J. Abrams will have his hands full in beginning this new tale of a galaxy far far away…

Fans have now seen both teaser trailers and have dissected every scene to put together clues that could give us a hint as to what the film will be about. One scene in particular that has stood out to me the most was when we see Luke (or presume to be Luke) placing his hand over R2-D2 stating “I have it” (the force). Even though we don’t know what the context or plot of the film is for now, I hope that Kathleen Kennedy and company will over look one crucial rumor that has circulated over time. That rumor would be Luke possibly turning over to the dark side.

Now there was a time when George Lucas and Lawrence Kasdan came together and thought that maybe it was a good idea for Luke to turn over to the dark side shortly after Vader takes off his mask in Return of the Jedi. Lucas proposed this dialogue to Kasdan:

“Luke takes his mask off. The mask is the very last thing — and then Luke puts it on and says, ‘Now I am Vader.’ Surprise! The ultimate twist. ‘Now I will go and kill the [Rebel] fleet and I will rule the universe.”

Surprisingly Kasdan actually liked his idea and responded saying, “That’s what I think should happen.”

Fortunately Lucas gave this second thoughts and mentioned that it would be too dark for kids watching the film. Thankfully Lucas changed his mind and went with the ending that we all know all to well. Lord knows all the backlash Lucas would have received had he have stayed with that decision. This makes me wonder though if we will have seen flashbacks of Luke turning over to the dark side in this next film. I really hope not but lets explore the possibilities.

Since we don’t know the story for the The Force Awakens (that should all change by Monday), there has been rumors that the majority of the film will focus on the newer characters trying to find and save Luke Skywalker. After all, these films have been the Skywalker story going all the way back to the Phantom Menace. We saw Anakin become Vader and rule an entire galaxy for many years. Then his son Luke learns the sad truth that he is indeed his father. Finally, Luke is able to face not only Vader but the Sith Lord himself.

Luke fought the toughest battle yet and overcame the dark side when tempted by Darth Sidious. In one of the best scenes of dialogue in all the Star Wars films, Luke responds proclaiming,

“Never. I’ll never turn to the dark side. You’ve failed your highness. I am a Jedi like my father before me.”

Luke has basically beaten his father with his anger and was one step closer to changing over to the dark side. However, after looking at his father’s now missing hand and then staring at his own robotic hand, Luke could not change and knew he had to save his father.

This was the biggest test of all and would be a detriment to his character if Abrams were to have made him evil at some point within the past thirty years. I really hope not since it would contradict his character entirely. However, I wouldn’t be opposed to him possibly fighting to stay away from the dark side. The presence of the force is always strong and with him now being the only remaining Jedi, it would be rather tough for him to stay on the right path. The dark side of the force will always be there which is interesting to think if maybe Luke succumbed to the dark side at some point. I strongly oppose this idea but until we have a general synopsis of the film, there’s still that possibility in the story.

There have also been multiple sources that have stated that the new characters (Finn, Rey, and Poe Dameron) are sent by Leia to try and find Luke Skywalker who has been away from society for some time. We don’t know if this is true or not, but as mentioned earlier the trailer does show us Luke all alone with R2-D2 with him. Could Luke be fighting the dark side over time? We don’t yet know but there is reason to believe this to be true. Hopefully the first official (and final) trailer will shed some light on this rumor.

What do you make of this possible story? Do you think Luke has turned to the dark side over this thirty year span? Would you be opposed to this if it were true? I’d like to hear your thoughts in the comment section below and please share!
