Big Hero 6 is a Disney film that came out last year and is based off of an obscure Marvel comic series from the 90's. It follows the story of Hiro, a 14 year old who has a gift in science, who takes responsibility for Baymax, a healthcare robot built by his brother. When Hiro's technology is used against him the only thing he can do is fight back with the help of Baymax and his brothers college friends.
I had heard a lot of good things about this film and i didn't know what to think when going into it. Well i can truly say that this is a great animated film and the fact that it is Marvel property adds to the greatness. It's a really good family film that does feel a little conventional but still delivers.
The animation is some of the best I've seen from Disney in a long time, it's slick and very stylish yet contains that classic comic book feel to it. The characters a great as well. Baymax is one of the most lovable characters i have ever seen and the relationship that forms between him and Hiro is way more emotional than i originally thought.
The whole team aspect of film really works as well. Imagine if the Scooby Doo gang all had super-suits and Scooby Doo was a giant robotic marshmallow, that's what it feels like. The film is also quite funny, but for the amount of humor in the film there is an equal amount of raw, human emotion which is rare for a kids film.
The only flaws i have with this film is that even though the college friends are funny and cool they only appear when they're needed, if they had been given a little more development then they would have been even better. Also the pacing is a little uneven, the film starts of very fast paced and then slow down ever so slightly in the middle. It does pick up again towards the end but it's just a small point.
I had a lot of fun with Big Hero 6 and it one of the best animated films of last year. It's great for fans of Disney and Marvel films alike.
