Hello all, in build up to the now-confirmed new peek at Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens on the 20th of October and with the release of the first and last official poster for the film, I thought it would be a great opportunity to look back at all the official Star Wars posters.
Together, we'll go in order of release!
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977)
Straight off the bat I have to say that I love the throwback to the original name 'Star Wars'. Although, 'Episode IV: a new hope' was introduced at some point between 1977 and 1978, surprisingly! This poster (and the other original poster) is one the many great things about original cinema and that is the creativity. This allows us to look at the film that we love in another light, like this one. This poster's colours (and everything else) are perfect! I really like the imagery of Darth Vader here. Just the way he is blended into the rest of the poster to represent how he controls and consumes everything he is a part of is really clever. The poster was really something to gaze at.
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Arguably one of the best sequels to any film ever, Lucasfilm hits us with another beautiful piece of imagery. I feel like this poster has a lot of connotations to it that not a lot of people think about. The icey landscape in the poster relates to the planet Hoth, using a predominantly white palette. I also feel like this represents something else: the whole gang, including C3P0, R2D2, Han, Leia, Luke and Chewy. They are all above these spikes and I feel as if it represents the Empire striking back, as any step they take could get them hurt, essentially. The power of Darth Vader and the mystery is quite clearly shown here too, with him blending into the dark and the overall size of him in comparison to the X-Wings.
Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983)
The gang back together! I'm still loving the artwork here. Seriously, it gets me every time! Again, like the Empire Strikes Back poster, this one seems to feature on a specific part of the film. In this case... it's Jabba Palace, even though there are elements of the Ewoks and the Death Star. I also love the stairs right at the back of the poster too. It gives the connotations of Luke's destiny, showing that all paths are leading to Vader.
Star Wars Episode I: A Phantom Menace (1999)
16 long years on since Return of the Jedi was first released and finally this official poster was released. Bringing back al that Star Wars nostalgia with it's gorgeous art and fascinating universe, only to be crushed with it's release... Once again, we have the antagonist of the film right up in the back showing his power along with the sunlight shining right above 'Ani' as it could very well represent that he was the chosen one to 'bright light' to the force. It could also represent the two suns of classic desert planet, Tatooine.
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002)
Even if the film is my least favourite, this is actually one of my favourite posters. It sticks with the same old Star Wars poster traits but it just feels so much bigger, as if there's a lot more going on in the picture than the others. You've got the awesome battles of the Clone Wars. Even if they aren't explored very much in the film, the scene where they come from above and save the surrounded Jedi is so freaking cool!
You've also got a very clear throwback to Boba Fett in this poster with his father Jango Fett. The only real noticeable difference here is the lack of an antagonist in the back of the poster. We had Darth Vader in the original three and Darth Maul in the last film, so where's our antagonist here? My best guess is that this is hinting towards Anakin's turn to the darkside as he is positioned right where the antagonist would be.
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Vader is back, finally! Like Attack of the Clones, this poster is awesome. There's so much going on yet it doesn't feel too packed. The artwork is there and it looks brilliant, especially the lightsaber clashes. I am also a fan of the positioning of Obi-Wan's and Anakin's starfighters. To me it connotes Anakin stabbing Obi-Wan in the back as his starfighter looks like it's about to get fired upon by Anakin's. Also, there is not a single positive facial expression here - everyone is mad. I mean, what can that tell you about the film alone!?
Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)
It's here! Finally it is here! This poster is outstanding, the colours, the amount of characters, the throwbacks, the new additions, everything! This a great movie poster and gives us a great view on the film and it's tone that all of the trailers for me, have really failed in giving. I really love the two defining sides here in the poster: Red and blue, the dark side and the light... it's so awesome! The only thing I am disappointed in is the fact that the poster to me isn't very artistic like all the others have been, here it just looks like it's been taken out of a scene and played around with a lot. It's also great to see Han and Leia back together, as they are my favourite on-screen couple. But where is Luke Skywalker? That is the million dollar question...
Where is he?!
What do you think about the different posters? Do you have a favourite? Or even a least favourite? Let me know! :)
