Get ready to go back to a galaxy far, far away...
On Sunday, October 18th, fans around the globe were treated to the official theatrical poster for the upcoming seventh film in the Star Wars franchise, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, due for a December 18th release. If you haven't gotten a chance to see it (which I doubt is possible; I mean, come on, this is huge freaking news), here's the tweet from Star Wars' official Twitter account:
And now Lucasfilm and Disney have fulfilled their promise on releasing the film's final trailer, which you can watch for the first time (or maybe the millionth time) below:
Got your fill? No? Okay, watch it a few more times. Come back to us when you're ready.
Alrighty then! Let's pull six moments from the trailer, shall we?
1. Who is Rey?
From the few opening scenes, we see a masked character rummaging through old machinery before a voiceover comes in of a woman (more than likely Maz Kanata, portrayed by Lupita Nyong'o using motion capture) asking someone, "Who are you?" We then hear a woman's reply: "I'm no one." Obviously, it's Rey!
While we still don't have a definite answer for who Rey is, we do get some insight into how she sees herself. If anything, this allows for more speculation leading up to the film's release. There's been news that the new trilogy will "continue the Skywalker lineage." Is Rey the possible Skywalker we'll see in the trilogy? We'll surely find out in two months' time.
2. Finn seems to be lacking purpose.
"I was raised to do one thing, but I've got nothing to fight for." We know that the film will pick up thirty years after Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. By that time, the Galactic Empire is all but gone, leaving many to wonder about the roles that Stormtroopers would have in the galaxy. Nine times out of ten, this will probably catapult Finn into his new role alongside Rey as they embark on their journey. And we can be sure that Finn will have something to fight for along the way.
3. Kylo Ren, the new Vader?
"Nothing will stand in our way," an ominous voice booms, "I will finish what you started." Boom! Kylo Ren in the flesh, standing over the iconic Darth Vader's damaged mask. The Force is strong in this one, as he sets out to wreak havoc for his version of the greater good across the stars. This time around, the Knights of Ren seem set on destroying all the obstacles in their way to get what they want. Will our heroes be able to withstand the pressure? Speaking of...
4. Po Dameron is tortured.
It appears that Po Dameron, the third in our new trio, is getting the Ren treatment by Kylo Ren. Why would Kylo be torturing him, though? Have they captured Po on suspicion that he is holding delicate information, or does Po serve a greater purpose in the struggle between good and evil? Either way, it doesn't look good.
5. The stories were true!
"The dark side. The Jedi. They're real." Finn and Rey take a little field trip and visit our favorite smuggler in the galaxy, Han Solo. After questioning him about the "stories" of old, he confirms every single bit of it. A well-deserved moment of nostalgia as fans get a shot of Harrison Ford accompanied by our quizzical new heroes. We've known that Solo would play a major role in the new trilogy, but just how major will that role be?
6. Who is the Force calling to?
We get more beautiful shots from the trailer as Maz Kanata reveals to someone that the Force is calling to them and that they should "just let it in." We've been getting hints (and blatant hints, at that) that Finn is Force-sensitive, but is it possible that Maz Kanata is still talking to Rey? More fuel could be added to that theory due to the fact Kylo Ren's lightsaber is parallel to Rey's staff in the poster. Whoever Maz Kanata is talking to, their world is about to change.
And with that, folks, we have our final trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens! With less than two months before the release, tickets have already gone on sale, causing a great amount of website traffic and crashes in the process. Remember to bring your tissues and your best Chewbacca impersonations on opening day. It's gonna be an emotional, fantastic Christmas season.
Here are a few more of my favorite shots from the trailer:
Honestly, who's not ready for that showdown?
Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in theaters on December 18, 2015!
