The Force Is With Us!!!
It is a great time to be a Star Wars fan right now! New merchandise continues to roll out everyday, more promotional images and videos are being released, and day by day we inch closer and closer to December 18th! To throw in an added bonus, a full length trailer was released for Episode VII last night and let me tell you, it was beautiful! It did a perfect job of showing us clips without revealing to much about the story. It seems more and more that trailers now a days give away the whole movie. I remember watching all three trailers for Avengers: Age of Ultron and feeling like I had watched the whole movie (essentially you did). But JJ Abrams, Lucasfilm, and Disney did a perfect job of putting together something truly magical and remarkable. But why are you reading my thoughts about when you can develop your own? If you haven't seen the trailer yet (shame on you), then watch it here!
So, I'm here today to break this trailer down and squeeze out every ounce of detail possible for you guys. Ready? Let's get started! CAUTION THERE MAY BE POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD!
Rey and Jakku
So the trailer first gives us some awesome glimpses of Rey, the female scavenger of Jakku. We also get some cool shots of her scavenging that old crashed Star Destroyer from the first trailer.
We also are treated to a beautiful desert sunset scene with everyone's new favorite droid, BB8!
However, what's most interesting about this part in the trailer, there are voice overs from two different characters, Rey and presumably Lupita Nyong'o's character Maz Kanata. Maz asks Rey, "Who are you?" to which Rey responds, "I'm no one,". We then watch a ship ascend from the sands of Jakku towards space while Rey curiously watches it.
I love how immediately Rey is starting to mirror Luke from the original trilogy. A lonely nobody growing up on an abandoned desert planet who wishes for nothing more than to escape and become someone important. I love how Rey puts up this facade of not caring that she's a nobody, but you can see through to her heart and know how much she longs for something greater. Daisy Ridley is owning this role already.
Finn and The First Order
Next we get a nice glimpse of the First Order army.
The Stormtroopers are gathered at Starkiller Base listening to the ruthless leader, General Hux, address them before a major battle.
Next we get a glimpse of Finn, also accompanied by a voice over. "I was raised to do one thing," Finn says.
We then see what is assumed to be Finn's TIE Fighter being shot in space as it tumbles towards the Desert of Jakku. Finn is also heard saying, "I've got nothing to fight for," implying that he is going to be a renegade Stormtrooper. It's obvious Finn isn't a fan of the First Order and wants out, but up until the beginning of this movie, he isn't sure how he would get out.
Kylo Ren and The First Order
Next we see Kylo Ren standing on the bridge of a Star Destroyer watching some sort of super laser being fired into space. "Nothing will stand in our way," he says.
We then see a close up of the villain as he says, "I will finish...
"... what You started". Now, we can safely assume that Kylo is talking to Darth Vader's helmet. HOWEVER, please note that it is also entirely possible that he could be talking to Supreme Leader Snoke as well! We'll have to wait and see!
We then see Kylo interrogating Poe Dameron in an unusual way. He has his hand up around Poe's face, implying that he is using some sort of Force power. Does Kylo have similar powers to those that the Scarlet Witch had in Age of Ultron? Can Kylo Ren make people see their worst fears? Or is he using the Dark Side to extract information from Poe? Either way it sounds brutal for Poe.
Whatever it is Kylo is doing, Poe is definitely in some sort of physical, emotional, and mental pain.
Is this forest fire part of a vision that Poe is having? Or did a Stormtrooper not pay attention to the Smokey The Bear commercials?
The Millennium Falcon
We are treated to some amazing footage of the Falcon evading TIE Fighters among the ship graveyards of Jakku. We here Rey say, "There are stories about what happened,".
We then see Rey and Finn standing inside the Falcon amidst a holo-map of sorts. Then an old familiar voice replies, "It's true,".
"All of it," Han Solo says. HAN FREAKING SOLO! I got chills as I watched this scene unfold. It's been known that the film will feature flashbacks. I wonder if we'll see any here while Han gives Rey and Fin a history lesson of sorts?
I personally thought this shot of the Falcon entering hyperspace was a great shot. In my opinion this is a perfect example of how to properly use CGI. This visual is purely stunning!
The Knights of Ren
This image is creepy. Mainly because it's our first glimpse of what I believe are the Knights of Ren. Notice the similar fashion between Kylo and the rest of the group. We kind of already have some background knowledge on the Knights of Ren. In the novel Star Wars: Aftermath, we learn of a mysterious Darth Vader obsessed cult. I personally believe and would almost guarantee that this group here and the one in the book are the same. Not necessarily the same members, but the same cult. Why are the preparing for battle? Who is their opponent? Finn? Rey? Han? Luke?!?!?! What if we are surprised with a final battle between the Knights of Ren and Luke Skywalker? How amazing would that be!?!?!
First Order Assault On Maz Kanata's Castle
Next we see some cool shots of some air battles between X-Wings and TIE Fighters.
Some Stormtroopers are seen assaulting something. Could it be that the First Order has tracked our band of heroes to Maz Kanata's Pirate Castle?
The only reason I say this because look at the structure in the center of the background. Yes the X-Wing chasing the TIE is cool, but remember that scenery and building.
A Montage Of Awesome
From here on out, the clips are a mashup of awesomeness showcasing Star Wars brilliance!
We then see Finn and Poe at some sort of Resistance base preparing for an epic battle no doubt. We also hear Han say, "The Dark Side," shortly followed by Han also saying, "The Jedi,".
We see a cool scene of an X-Wing blasting a TIE Fighter out of the sky.
We see some more explosions on Jakku. Notice Finn, Rey and BB8 are all present. No doubt the First Order have found Finn and want him dead.
Remember when I told you to remember a certain building in the background of a particular scene? Well this is why. I believe that building is the Pirate Castle belonging to Maz Kanata. Why would Han take our new heroes here? Rumor has it that they seek answers from Maz regarding a certain someone's lightsaber. I won't spoil it for you. You can wait or go digging for info on your own time.
Han then says, "They're real," as we see the shot of a hooded hand gently caressing the dome of everyone's old favorite droid, R2D2. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that the mysterious cloaked figure in this shot is none other than LUKE SKYWALKER! Why? Well, if you recall in the second trailer, Luke is heard saying "The Force is strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. My sister has it. You have that power too,". When Luke says "I have it", we see this particular scene. When Han says "They're real" (regarding the Jedi), we see the same clip. Whether this is a flashback scene or a scene set in the present time of the movie remains to be unknown at this point, I think we have sufficient evidence to suggest that the person in this clip is Luke.
Captain Phasma and the Invasion of Jakku
Next we get to see some awesome shots of Captain Phasma and the First Order invading the planet Jakku.
Why is Rey crying in this scene? Again there are some rumors going around that I can neither confirm nor deny, but I will not discuss them in this post. Again wait for the movie please! But if you must, dig elsewhere on the Internet.
Why are Han, Chewie, and Finn surrendering in this shot? We also hear Maz's voice over again saying, "The Force..."
BB8 riding shotgun in an X-Wing. Maz's voice over continues, "It's calling to you,".
More air battles! This looks epic!
Stormtroopers under attack! Why? What are they doing? Is this a battle scene from Jakku?
Who is Rey shooting? Remember that picture of Kylo Ren in a forest that was released not to long ago? Is Rey trying to shoot Kylo here?
I just think it's funny to see a Stormtrooper try and shoot down an X-Wing with a blaster rifle. Their aim is bad enough trying to hit foot soldiers. Hopefully though JJ fixed this little problem.
We see some more TIES chasing the Falcon, THROUGH A STAR DESTROYER!
After some more explosions, we finally have our first look at Princess Leia in the movie! And she's embracing Han! Ahh the feels! But why does she look so depressed?
Finn v.s. Kylo Ren
We see Finn ignite Anakin and Luke's old lightsaber...
To fight off Kylo Ren! This is going to be insane!!!
The trailer finally ends showing the title card.
