Everyone knew Star Wars: The Force Awakens was going to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, movies of all time. But not even Yoda could have foreseen just how enormous it's already turning out to be. Next to other releases, it's already looking like a moon.
Oh, crap, sorry Kenobi. It is-and it's already destroying records. Fandango's pre-sale reports say it's brought in $6.5 Million in IMAX domestic sales. The second-biggest movie hadn't even topped $1 million.
So who was that unfortunate Alderaan in Star Wars' sights? None other than 2012's The Hunger Games. The Force Awakens showed no mercy. Fandango reported that it sold over eight times the amount of tickets Katniss and friends did.
Of course, we'll have to wait and see how it does on its release day, but right now it is again expected to blast to the top of the leaderboards with a projected $615 million opening. Over the course of its likely very long stay in theaters, it should cross the $1 billion mark at lightspeed, and possibly even cruise past two. If fan interest is any indicator, Star Wars should even surpass James Cameron's Avatar, the current #1 grossing movie of all time.
