Ever since Captain Marvel was announced, fans have been clamouring to know who will be the lucky lady to portray the daring superhero. Given that Captain Marvel is still a long way off (after Spider-Man caused delays, Ant-Man and The Wasp pushed the release date back again from the original July 2018 to March 2019), we're probably not going to get any news on casting for quite some time. But recently Marvel producer Jeremy Latchman and big boss Kevin Feige offered some of their thoughts on the plethora of fan cast lists for Carol Danvers...
Latchman: "We always have a clear sense of who we want to cast and who we’re interested in."
Feige: "When a cast list comes out, we look at it!"
Latchman: "We read it, we go through it, we read the comments, we look at who people like. Sometimes it’s really enlightening. Sometimes it’s the exact same person that they’ve been saying over and over again that we don’t think is right."
So there you have it folks - the Marvel brain trust do have some people in mind for Captain Marvel, but it won't be who you'd expect. So who could be the person that fans keep advocating casting, but the team "don't think is right"? It's difficult to pick just one candidate: there are a few names that pop up in every casting list, any of which Latchman could be referring to.
The most popular choices are usually Emily Blunt (who would be awesome), Natalie Dormer (also awesome), Ronda Rousey (definitely equal to Carol in badassery), and Katee Sackhoff (beyond perfect for the role). But it looks like we'll have to think outside the box a bit to try and predict which actor Marvel will pick, so here's a list of people we think would be amazing, but might not be someone you'd expect...
No stranger to the action movie genre, Lucy Liu is something of an icon for badass heroines after Charlie's Angels and Kill Bill.
An accomplished painter as well as actor, Lucy Liu is currently starring in CBS' Elementary. So why would she be perfect for Carol Danvers? Well first of all she's the right age: Carol is a "full bird Colonel" in the US Air Force before she joins the Avengers, and considering there's a minimum requirement of years served before officers reach this level of promotion, most fans estimate Carol is aged between 36 (she'd have to be a prodigy rising through the ranks) or 44+. At 46 years old, Lucy Liu is perfect for the role, not to mention her amazing acting talent and serious badassery that would fit Carol Danvers down to the ground.
Currently starring as love-to-hate-her (or just love her) character Cersei Lannister on Game of Thrones, Lena Headey has had multiple ass-kicking roles in the past.
Of course, Lena Headey's Game Of Thrones commitments mean she might be too busy for Marvel to cast her (the same goes for Natalie Dormer, though she did manage to star in [The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1](tag:446261)). But through acting prowess and badassery along, Lena Headey is perfect for Carol Danvers.
Ok, at 32 years Lyndie Greenwood's Carol Danvers would have to be a serious prodigy to reach the Colonel rank. But we're willing to make an exception for this awesome actress!
Currently starring as Jenny Mills in Sleepy Hollow, Lyndie Greenwood has the emotional depth capable for portraying Carol, and she's also adept at handling multiple weapons (well, prop weapons at least). For all her badassery, Greenwood also has a vulnerability and sympathetic energy, which again would work perfectly for those plots where Carol is challenged the most.
Plus, casting someone who isn't white as Captain Marvel would not only be a bold move on Marvel's part, it would also mean we'd finally get some representation for women of colour on the Avengers team!
Alright, Theron is a pretty popular choice for Captain Marvel, and Emily Blunt even commented on the fact that she and Theron were among the most popular fan casts...
"I think it’s because the list is very short, because we don’t see women in these kind of roles. I think as soon as you do a role like that, like Charlize did or I did, it's there’s like four of us or something. So I think that’s why the rumors happen, because they’re like, 'who else? Surely not another girl can wield a gun,' you know what I mean? 'A woman doing push-ups? There’s only one who can do that'."
Blunt's comments are very on point, but regardless of the few action roles there are for women, both she and Theron would make fantastic Carol Danvers. Plus they're big stars, so if Robert Downey Junior really does leave the MCU (and there are big hints that Infinity War will be Iron Man's last outing), Marvel will have another Hollywood powerhouse to fill the fame vacuum. Charlize Theron as the new Robert Downey Jnr of the MCU, making snarky comments and being generally adored by fans? I could get behind that!
Bonus: Gina Torres as Monica Rambeau
Let's just get this straight: Monica Rambeau, the first African American female Avenger, was actually Captain Marvel before Carol Danvers adopted the title. Seeing as Kevin Feige confirmed that the MCU's Captain Marvel will be Carol, it's highly unlikely we'll see Monica in this role. But she's still a superhero in her own right, and a long time friend of Danvers.
The Captain Marvel movie will need a supporting cast, with characters from Carol's comics to add variation to the story. Marvel usually adds in supporting superhero members of the team in solo features (War Machine and Falcon to name just two), so why not Monica Rambeau as Photon, or Spectrum or any of her hero aliases?
I feel like there's pretty much no need to justify the Gina Torres casting. Anyone who's seen Firefly (or Suits) knows how much of a badass she is.
So that's our list for unexpected Captain Marvel casting, and there's plenty we left off (Jessica Chastain, Dichen Lachman, and Rosario Dawson to name a few). Here's hoping the Marvel bosses take a look at this one... maybe we managed to guess their Carol after all!
