I love a heart-warming love story as much as the next person, but this one really takes the cake when it comes to laying on the romantic feels; partly because of the backdrop, and partly because it comes from a rather unexpected source -- an Avenger!
Actor Paul Bettany, who brought to life Vision in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, has opened up about the moment that he realized that he was in love with his future wife, the beautiful Jennifer Connelly.
The actress appears in November's issue of More magazine, in which the events of how the two became a couple is related. As the story goes:
On September 11, 2001, the actor Paul Bettany was buying groceries in a Tuscan hill town when he noticed a crowd around a television in a cafe. The group was too quiet to be soccer fans. He joined it in time to see United Airlines Flight 175 hit the World Trade Center.
Frantic with worry for the well-being of his dear friend, Jennifer, who he knew lived with her son in downtown Manhattan, Paul made repeated attempts to get in contact with her.
The pair had first met on the set of the epic drama A Beautiful Mind, choosing to keep in touch in the years to follow. In case you need reminding, here's the trailer for the movie, for which Jennifer won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress:
"I was bitten"
After hours and hours of unanswered phone calls, and having to deal with the reduced cell phone signal in the disaster zone that was New York at the time, finally Paul came to a hard-hitting realization. In true superhero style, a sudden moment of clarity dawned upon him:
At about hour 48, he asked himself why he was so desperate to reach her. “It hit me, like, Ohhh, no,” Bettany recalls in his fine-sandpaper voice. “I was bitten.” In a flash he knew that if Connelly was alive, he was going to marry her. On January 1, 2003, he did.
It was in that instance of absolute chaos that Paul realized that Jennifer was the love of his life, and that he simply couldn't live another further moment without her. Isn't that amazing?
True love at its best! *Sigh*
