Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens has sprung many questions to our minds; will the film be good? Will Jar Jar make a return? Where is Boba Fett? But the most important question of them all is... Where is Luke Skywalker?

Luke has been absent from all three trailers besides hearing stock footage of his voice from ROTJ in the second teaser. He's also been absent from all the merchandising.

There have been many rumours circulating the web of his whereabouts, and many people think he has turned to the dark side. Others think he just won't be a big part of the movie. About a decade ago, Mark Hamill said on the panel "Dinner for Five" that he wanted to make Luke Skywalker evil in Return of the Jedi, but the idea was quickly turned down. Hamill states:

"As an actor that would be more fun to play. I just thought that’s the way it was going from when we finished [Empire] ... I’ll have to come back, but I have Han Solo in my crosshairs, and I’ll be about to kill him or about to kill the Princess or about to kill somebody that we care about."

The main rumour at the moment is that Luke disappeared about a decade after the Battle of Endor and the downfall of Darth Vader. To join the darkside, a key step is to give into your hatred and this is exactly what Luke did in ROTJ to defeat Vader. But in this case, Luke resisted and said "Never!" before the Emperor zapped him with lightning!

Along with this rumour, it's been said that Luke hasn't been seen in about 20 years and this is due to Luke thinking he may still be corrupt and could quite possibly turn to the dark side. So, he had to isolate himself from society in order to protect others.

However, if you take a closer look into the filming locations, there is a specific location that could potentially support this rumour. For both Episode 7 and Episode 8 of the new Star Wars trilogy, Disney is taking the filming to the small remote island of Skellig in Ireland.

The whole island was, in fact, closed off while the scenes were shot whilst other boats and vessels were told not to sail near the island. There was even an Irish Navy boat making sure sailors kept their distance.

If you weren't aware already, Skellig was actually chosen because it was a destination for a small group of asectic monks who wanted to become closer to God. The monks left society and civilisation to this remote and hard-to-access island. This really reminds me of the rumours that Luke wants to close himself off from society. This island would be a perfect location for it!

This also looks like an awesome filming location, so I can't wait to see it on screen, for whatever it may be used for!

The idea of Luke turning to the dark side has always been toyed around. Even in ROTJ, there was a plan for Luke to suddenly take a hold of Darth Vader's helmet and wear it! Even in the Star Wars The Force Unleashed video games, the idea has been shown briefly.

Personally I think the rumour is true, I do believe that Luke has isolated himself from society, it makes total sense with the facts we have and would be a great character arc for us to pursue.

What do you think? Do you think we've lost our favourite Skywalker to the Darkside, again? Let me know!
