It takes a great actor to pull off a heart-wrenching crying scene and pass it off as genuine emotion. Letting their faces crumple and fall to portray their characters aching, suffering and tragedy takes some real uninhibited contortion and, more often than not, transforms their beauty into something pretty damn ugly...and often, hilarious.

Here's a list of some of the best on-screen cry faces in cinema. Cry me a river...

1. Leonardo DiCaprio

A pre-Titanic Leo in The Basketball Diaries is where he really began to perfect his cry-face, although What's Eating Gilbert Grape kicked the development process off. In this scene he really shows us the heartbreak, complete with snotty nose and tonsil shot.

And he only gets better with age.

Oh the drama, oh the betrayal, oh the complexity!

2. Norman Reedus

The Walking Dead's Daryl's face of pain retreats so hard his neck started to fold in on itself.

3. Kim Kardashian

Sure we do, Kim. It must take a lot of bad feels to get your face to show that much emotion.

4. Teri Hatcher

It shows true talent to contort an otherwise beautiful face into something that looks like...this. The best ugly cry face goes to Teri Hatcher!

Or does it...

5. Claire Danes

Homeland's Carrie Mathison probably has the most celebrated cry-face in recent TV history. She told Elle magazine that she wasn't over-egging it, rather:

“It’s just the way feelings register on my face.”

How special.

6.Morgan Saylor

And it would seem that Homeland is hitting all the best emosh buttons! Dana Brody clearly learnt the art of the face crumple from her cry-mentor and co-star Claire Danes.

7. James Van Der Beek

N'aw, poor Dawson. Not only is his ugly cry super lol-worthy and mocked by the entire internet, but it was totally unscripted.

They yell cut and say, 'Oh my god. That was amazing!' So I remember being completely surprised by it because it was completely sincere. The fact that it's being used to mock me now, I think it's so funny."

Do you, though? Do you really?

8. Julianne Moore

Julianne Moore has a solid selection of awesome cry faces to choose from. She's been in the bizz a long time and played a lot of roles which required her to whip out the bottom lip and make it tremble and sag like the pro she is. The scene above is from Blindness and it's a personal fave. Check out the rest here.

9. Maggie Grace

From Law & Order to Lost, Maggie Grace is always getting a bit Taken away by emotion.

10. Emma Watson

Emma Watson's on-screen cry face is so neat and delicate her face even tidies her lips away.

11. Sarah Michelle Gellar

The clench, the brows, the emotion! Cannot handle how cute SMG's ugly cry face is.

12. Tobey MaGuire

Tobeys Spiderman face wobble rivals Claire Danes in terms of brilliance. I mean, look at that nose spread!
