Supergirl is set to be one of the new greats on a long list of superhero television shows. There have been some wavering thoughts as to whether or not it will succeed, but I am here to tell you, it is great. I really enjoyed the pilot and it lived up to, and went past, even my optimistic expectations. The one thing that stood out to me was Melissa Benoist's performance as Supergirl. I felt that it borrowed very much from the New 52 Supergirl but with her own personal twist. I got the opportunity to ask Melissa if she read any Supergirl stories from the comics to prepare for her role.

Melissa Benoist actually read the New 52 in order to prepare for the role!

I read some of the New 52 but also what I love about what Ali, Greg Andrew and Sarah have created is that I truly feel that we are making the modern, 2015 version of her and so I did want to know the world but I also wanted to kind of separate myself from it a little bit to really make her my own.

Something about the pilot that I noticed is that Melissa seemed very comfortable in there; nothing felt too forced. The biggest thing that this show has going for it is Melissa’s ability to come into her own as Supergirl and bring an accurate representation with her own personality mixed in, and it definitely works well.

Supergirl still doesn’t know the full extent of her powers!

We see in the pilot that Supergirl has control of a good portion of her powers but as Kara makes progression in the Supergirl role, she will discover new levels of power that even she doesn’t think are possible. I asked producer Greg Berlanti if she will grow stronger as the show progresses, which he confirmed. Not only will she grow stronger in terms of her abilities, but her inner strength will as well. Kara will progress as a person, not only as Supergirl, as she develops an even greater moral fiber. It should be interesting to see these developments take place and I can’t wait for the rest of the season!

Supergirl will prove doubters wrong!

Many have already discounted Supergirl’s ability to be a great show because it won’t be as dark as, say, Arrow or Daredevil, but trust me, it will be superbly on par. Supergirl is a show that families should have no problem watching together due to the lighthearted nature of the character. Supergirl has never been a very dark character so the tone definitely works here. Hopefully the show is truly here to stay, and with Melissa Benoist's acting ability and Greg Berlanti’s vision, I don’t see a reason why it wouldn’t be. The pilot was truly “super” and hopefully that narrative is the same for the rest of the season!
