Fan theories come in all shapes and sizes but are nevertheless entertaining. And let's face it, the internet is FULL of these theories made to blow our minds. Bold and intriguing concepts are made to add a bit more flavor to our already seasoned favorites. For instance, the theory that The Flintstones is set in a post-apocalyptic future or that Andy's mom in Toy Story is Emily, Jessie's previous owner. While I don't agree with every fan theory out there, (for example, the theory that The Joker in the upcoming Suicide Squad is really Jason Todd - but it exists nonetheless) it's just amusing to look at movies or television from new angles. This one theory in particular had my jaw hit the floor when I first saw it:
Tommy Pickles Is A Time Lord!
This theory has been floating around the internet for quite sometime now. But seeing as I just became a Whovian in this past year AND being a lover of 90's Nickelodeon since the 90's (duh), this one took me for quite a loop! After scouring the internet for more information to support this theory (and coming up with the same results over and over), I have noticed three common elements in most of my findings:
1. Adventures With Companions
We can't deny that both Tommy and The Doctor are known for their spectacular adventures. In both cases, they narrowly escape certain danger with cunning, excellent timing and tremendous amounts of luck time and time again. And in extremely dire straights, they can always rely on their companions (both traveling and adventure specific) to assist them. And not to mention both interact heavily with a redhead and have a budding romance with one of their other companions (Tommy and Kimi in All Grown Up?).
2. The Outfits
This bit mainly refers to the eleventh Doctor portrayed by Matt Smith. On multiple occasions, he attempts to justify his personal choices by simply stating "they are cool":
And it just so happens that most of the fashion statements made by Smith are seen worn by Tommy.
3. The Screwdriver
The Screwdriver: the ultimate escape tool for Tommy and nearly every Doctor. In Doctor Who, it is a multi-purpose utility: flashlight, amplifier, scanner (both biological and technological) and, of course, opening and locking doors. Tommy, however, primarily uses his for escape purposes, it is just a screwdriver after all. But the fact that as a baby he is able to use tools to his advantage, I'd say he has tons of potential for something a bit more high-tech.
All of these are points are pretty sound, but I was surprised that all the other sites have only scratched the surface of this theory. Here are three more reasons I have come up with as to why Tommy could in fact be a Time Lord:
Almost every Doctor has had a famous line or catchphrase that has become synonymous with that reincarnation. In the case of the ninth, tenth and eleventh Doctors, their particular phrases are sprinkled in throughout their run. Whether it was Matt Smith's "*** are cool" or David Tennant's particular way of delivering an apology, these common lines became their's and their's alone. Since the reboot in 2005 (minus the current Doctor, Peter Capaldi), every Doctor has had a signature phrase as they dove into danger. Much like Tommy Pickles' go-to quote(s) when he justifies his dangerous decisions.
2. The Agelessness
Just think about it: obviously The Doctor and all the Time Lords do not age as humans do, but apparently neither does Tommy.
- Rugrats' first episode premiered August 11, 1991 with "Tommy's First Birthday."
- Since then, there have been FOUR holiday specials (Two Christmas, a Chanuka and Kwanzaa), the conception and birth of his baby brother, Dil, and Angelica goes to preschool.
- Meaning that Tommy would have to at least have aged two years in this time period!
- Despite this, HE LOOKS EXACTLY THE SAME! No hair, no teeth, still in diapers, it's as if age has escaped him (much like that of the over 900 year old Doctor).
- Even if we were to include the All Grown Up series that aired from 2003-2008, we have only seen ONE "new form" for Tommy while we have seen 12 reincarnations of the Doctor since 1963.
Using June 11,1990 as his birthday, I still say Tommy looks pretty young for someone who should be 25.
3. The Archrival Of Our Protagonist
The Master is arguably The Doctor's biggest enemy. One of The Doctor's own kind, The Master is a renegade Time Lord driven into madness by a persistent drumming, implanted in his head by Rassilon and the High Council for their own benefit in the future. Despite his mental instability, The Master has shown on numerous accounts his diabolic genius, working his way into positions of power many a times. While The Doctor and The Master are normally at odds with each other, the two have formed temporary truces on occasion.
Angelica Pickles is arguably Tommy's biggest adversary. One of Tommy's own kind, his cousin is a malicious toddler who has a sense of entitlement implanted into her head since birth by her parents and every other adult. Although she is still young (being forever three years old), she has shown that she can be extremely devious, devilishly manipulative with adults and children alike and rather brilliant in her trickery and pranks. Despite her supposed hatred for "the dumb babies," she is able to play nice when the mood strikes her.
So what do you think? Could there really be a connection between the two shows? Or are all these instances just sheer coincidence? Leave a comment below!
